About the Item

Signed lower right for the Hague painter Jan Gerard Smits (1823 - 1910) who was a pupil of Salomon Verveer. Exceptional artistic performance on this little work: confident brush strokes sparkling in great way of “modern” art (slightly impressionistic notes!) The city is “captured” and immersed in a happy sunny dimension. I have nothing to say about the famous Dutch school of painting. It’s just that this artist not only did not let down traditions, but also translated into the 20th century in the best possible way. The stretcher is labeled "Kunsthandel Jacques Aa. Vijzelstraat 105 TEL 30798. A'DAM C.” (Originele Schilderijen van Hollandse en Buitenlandse Meesters). Antique oil painting on canvas, signed, framed. Size app.: 24.6 x 30.6 cm (roughly 9.7 x 12 in); 32 x 38.5 cm (roughly 12.6 x 15.2 in). Very good pristine condition with minimal wear to frame. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 0.9 kg is going to measure 3 kg packed for shipment . G. Smits early work belongs to the romanticism. He liked to paint city and village views. As a student of Salomon Verveer he chose to paint urban and village views and views from the beach and the dunes of Scheveningen and Katwijk. But his work was not limited to the vicinity of his residence and he regularly crossed the country in search of picturesque towns and landscapes. Smits taught Queen Sophie, first wife of King Willem III. His works can be found in many museums, including the Gemeentemuseum and the Boymans-Van Beuningen. Seen towards Reguliersbreestraat and Munttoren. Right: Half-moon alley with Police station house no. 6 on the corner. Left: Tavern Louis XVI. Reguliersbreestraat is a street in Amsterdam that lies between Rembrandtplein and Muntplein. The street is named after the Regular Monastery (1394-1532). This monastery stood just outside the former city gate, the Regulierspoort, of which the Munttoren is still a remnant. The Tuschinski Theater is located in Reguliersbreestraat.
