Biography: Martinus Antonius Kuytenbrouwer, commonly known as Martinus, was born on November 21, 1821, in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. He inherited his artistic talents from his father, Kuytenbrouwer Martinus Sr., and further honed his skills under the guidance of Eugène Isabey, a renowned French Romantic Painter, during his studies in Paris.
Martinus distinguished himself as a painter, specializing in landscapes adorned with animals. His artistic repertoire expanded beyond painting, as he also engaged in drawing, etching, and lithography. Notably, he served as a painter at the court of Napoleon III, marking a significant chapter in his career.
Initially based in The Hague until 1845, Martinus ventured to Paris in 1847, where he immersed himself in the vibrant artistic scene of the city. His time in The Hague saw him exhibit his works from 1845 to 1864, showcasing his growing prominence in the Dutch art community.
The period between 1849 and 1860 witnessed Martinus residing and working in Brussels, a city that further enriched his artistic experiences. After this stint, he returned to Paris and Fontainebleau, contributing to the artistic circles in these iconic French locales.
Collaboration played a vital role in Martinus's career, and in 1864, he joined forces with Nicolaas Johanes Wilhelmus de Roode, a Dutch painter known for his portraits. This partnership undoubtedly added depth and diversity to Martinus's artistic endeavors.
The artist's life journey brought him back to Paris, where he spent his final years.
Martinus Antonius Kuytenbrouwer passed away on November 12, 1897, leaving behind a legacy of artistic brilliance.
One of his enduring contributions to the art world is a portrait displayed in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, capturing his essence as an artist. Additionally, a pen drawing by Martinus recently found its place in the Rijksmuseum, having originally been housed in the Brussels Museum, serving as a testament to the enduring value of his work.
Martinus Antonius Kuytenbrouwer's artistic legacy lives on through his paintings, drawings, and collaborative efforts, reflecting his dedication to the craft and his enduring impact on the art scene of his time.

Biography: Hendrik Barend Koekkoek, often signing as Hendrik Barend (H.B.) Koekkoek, in the realm of 19th-century art, emerges as a captivating painter born in Amsterdam on November 23, 1849. A scion of the esteemed Koekkoek family, he gained renown for his landscapes and woodland scenes, following in the artistic footsteps of his father, marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek.
Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s life unfolds with a certain mystery, his artistic journey shaped by training from his father and, likely, his uncle Marinus Adrianus. In 1878, he tied the knot with Carolina Allardina Cornelia Pierson and ventured into the artistic scenes of Hilversum and Brussels, simultaneously opening an art dealership in Amsterdam.
Around 1882, the call of London beckoned, echoing the path paved by his brother Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger. In England, he painted landscapes near Guildford, akin to his cousin Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek. The latter part of his life remains shrouded in obscurity.
Barend Hendrik Koekkoek’s artistic style, steeped in the romantic tradition of the Koekkoek family, adorned canvases with landscapes, woodlands, and marine scenes. His London sojourn witnessed the creation of winter landscapes with towering trees, showcased in exhibitions across Dutch cities. He breathed his last in London before 1909.
His artistic legacy lives on in institutions like the Paul Tétar van...

French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian Brigand. Oil on Canvas.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame.
The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays.
There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo).
Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically
The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy.
An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony .
