About

Laura Lloyd Fontaine's studio looks over the Lowcountry marsh of Charleston, S.C. When the tide is high, she paddles through the narrow creeks and marsh grass and into the Charleston Harbor. It is from this vantage point, close to the water in her kayak, that the bones of her landscape paintings emerge. As the sunsets, she takes countless photographs as the light sparkles across the water. " I paint what I see, what I love, and I paint from my heart. The beauty of the marsh grass, the white egrets, the Spanish moss, the 300-year-old live oaks, the clarity of the colors in the sky reflecting in the water can take your breath away. I feel so blessed to live in such beauty every day of my life. Not a tide goes by that I am not right here on the edge of the water marveling at its beauty." Laura also relies on her many charcoal sketches of compositions and pleine air paintings for the intensity of the light and the value changes. "The sky changes so fast that it is important to paint small and capture the values. That helps me in the studio when I am ready to create a painting. With out those studies I would be lost, so I try to paint outside a few times a week." At the age of 40, Laura became pregnant with her first child. She lived on a farm in Buford, Ga. with an 18-acre lake. "The beauty of the country and once again the reflections on the water inspired me to start painting in oils." Laura studied under Dee Beard Dean, the founder of PAPSE. That was the beginning of her passion for oils. Before Laura's son was 1 yrs old, she and her husband had moved to Charleston, S.C. Laura started taking workshops from artist such as Rhett Thurman, West Frazier, Ken Bachaus, Larry Moore, Kevin Fitzgerald, Lois Griffel, Perry Austin and Chris Groves. Her style was traditional realism. In the past few years, there have been drastic changes in Laura's life, such as a divorce and losing her mother to Parkinsons. "Because of the sudden changes in the economy and the emotional changes in my life, I decided to paint large with a contemporary flair. I am working with mixed media. I prime my canvas with Venetian Plaster, sketch a composition with water base paint, apply several layers of oil glazes, finish the highlights with a palette knife, and seal it with several layers of varnish and buffed wax. I use large brushes to avoid detail and create a soft luminosity." Laura graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Studio Art at Hollins College and continued her studies at the Philadelphia College of Art. In 1986, she took many classes in Great Neck, N.Y to learn the techniques of the old masters at distressing and faux finishing walls and furniture. She is a member of the Oil Painters of America, a Signature Member of the Charleston Artist Guild, American Impressionist Society, and American Woman Artist.
