About the Item

Here I’m selling a very interesting work by an Important female American impressionist painter Lee Lufkin Kaula (1865-1957). Painting has Four Different EXHIBITION Labels: 1. Boston Art Club Exhibition 2. Pennsylvania Academy Fine Arts 1907 Exhibition 3. Poland Spring Gallery Exhibition 1908 4. The Arts Student League Of New York I Purchased this painting a few weeks ago as an unsigned impressionist painting, thinking it’s a copy of a major French Artist. After I took it home, I started to think this is too good to be a copy…… And when I started to open the back, I discovered 4 very good Major labels, who the Artist is and all the info! I was honestly soo impressed to find a rare piece like this The painting is titled “On the Banks of Loing River”, a major river where Sisley, Monet and all other first tier French painters spent time to paint The painting is in very good original condition. It’s a Gouache/Pastel on Paper Measures without frame 18 1/4 x 15 1/2 inches and overall 21 x 18 inches. Bio on Artist Born in Erie, Pennsylvania, Lee Kaula became an impressionist painter known for luminous landscapes and scenes of villages. She had a wealthy family, so she did not have financial worries. She first studied with Charles Melville Dewey in New York and then she and a friend, Claire Shuttleworth, went to Paris in 1894, and Kaula studied with Edmond Aman-Jean at the Academie Colarossi. Charles Gruppe also gave her encouragement. In 1902, she married artist William Jurian Kaula (1871-1953), whom she had met in Crecy, France, and they were the first artists to have studio space in the Fenway Studios in Boston at 30 Ipswich Street. Painting together, they lived in one space and used the other for a studio. They spent summers painting in Bank Village, near New Ipswich, New Hampshire, and became known there for their spectacular flower gardens. She was a member of several Boston art associations including the Copley Society, the Guild of Boston Artists and the Boston Society of Watercolorists. She exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1897 and 1898; the 1901 Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York; and the 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition in San Francisco. From 1897 to 1913, she exhibited 14 times at the Art Institute of Chicago, and in 1928 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. From 1901 to 1922, she was in five annual exhibitions at the National Academy of Design.

A celebration of color and a relic of the artist’s travels abroad, the composition is well-balanced, exuding photojournalistic and documentarian qualities. In Karnak, Custis paints a compelling and dynamic image of a great ancient Egyptian ruin. Seven distant men, likely Bedouins dressed...
