About the Item

1.Ruins by the river Watercolor  50 x 33 cm Signed lower right 2.Tomb Black pencil with white chalk highlights 32 x 25 cm 3.Méharée Black chalk with colored highlights 29.8 x 43.2 cm All framed Lucienne Épron grew up in the Charente Maritime in France, and was awakened to art under the influence of her tutors Felix Lionnet and Victor Richard, painters from Nantes. She followed the teaching of François Rivoire and Blanche Odin from whom her beginnings are borrowed. Armed with this knowledge, she taught in Rochefort and then in Strasbourg. Nothing so far answers our question. From the pleasant still lifes to the views of Jerusalem and the Nile, there remains a void to be filled, a singularity to be found. We know that it was in Strasbourg that she met Pierre Montet, who was then in charge of the publication of the surveys and discoveries of the Tomb of Ty for the French Institute in Cairo. On the spot, in Saqquarah, it is the effervescence, the competition is hard, it is necessary to publish before the English. The French archaeologists lacked an artist to carry out the surveys, to draw, to report. Lucienne Épron was hired in 1930. Work at Saqqarah began in April 1931. Our painter thus travels from 1931 to 1936 between France and the Orient. Rochefort seems far away now. And yet, it is probably in Rochefort that the journey begins. The singularity is there. In the thirties, a woman painter leaves for Egypt. The story is beautiful. Then fifty five years old, she follows the archaeologists of the Institute. But Egypt and the Orient, she had crossed and dreamed of them much earlier at Pierre Loti's, a stone's throw from her home in the Vendée. She evoke later the celebrations at Loti's house, from Cairo, in her text in October 1940. She recounts her encounter in the living room with the mummy who, I quote: "continued his dream of eternity in a glass cage. The strength of the images collected here, those that will be published by the Institute in 1939 as part of a scientific mission, owes much to this part of the dream and fascination exerted by Egypt and perhaps also to the fantasy of Loti, who knew how to plant an idea, a desire that would take more than twenty years to germinate.

Pair of Grisaille paintings Rustic scenes 18th century French Rococo Master
By Jean-Baptiste Pillement
Located in Stockholm, SE
Attributed To French Master Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728 - 1808). Magnificent rococo pair paintings depicting scenes from the life of Europe of the 18th century. Two scenes tell us about the lives of travelers and fishermen of the time. Two frames of the same century perfectly complement these paintings. Paintings made in the technique: Pastel, Bodycolor, chalks, and perhaps gouache on paper or paperboard supported by wooden boards. Gold leaf neoclassical frames of early 1800s (not examined under frames). On the reverse side of the wooden substrate, there is a stamp, "Bundesdenkmalamt Wien", Perhaps Jean-Baptiste Pillement (1728 –1808). Antique old paintings...

"Fence Jumper", oil painting, figurative, boy, flight, field, outside, summer
Located in Toronto, Ontario
"Fence Jumper" is an oil painting with chalk and graphite on wood panel, and measures 16" high by 12" wide. It is finished with a clear resin across the surface, lending the artwork a particular warmth and liquidity that is rare and lovely to behold. Typical of the artist, the painting is a mystery despite its apparent simplicity – a boy, a young lad leaps over the fence, seen here mid-flight. It's clearly important to the boy. His focus and sense of achievement ring out. Drawn lines and painterly brushstrokes render the scene, but also note the toned wood coming through as color and texture. All of it held, as if in time, by the resin layer acting as a lens to both transmit this picture and admit light to the picture. A true artifact. From Will Hudson...
