About the Item

Oil on wood panel 19,5 x 33 cm (23,4 x 36,4 cm with frame) = 7.7 × 13.0 in (9.2 × 14.3 in with frame) Double-sided study, signed at the bottom on both sides A pupil of Jules Alexis Muenier, Gustave Courtois and Jean-Paul Laurens, Madeleine Doillon Toulouse devoted herself to painting landscapes of her native region and surrounding areas. The Jura and Switzerland were her main sources of inspiration. Few of her travels are documented, providing evidence of the journeys that nourished her palette. A view of Piazza Navona attests to a trip to the Eternal City, and a few views of Paris punctuate her career. More unusual at the beginning of the century, Madeleine Doillon Toulouse seems to have travelled beyond the Arctic Circle. We have evidence of a view of a garden in Finland and our Norwegian landscape. With a synthetic palette, which is the hallmark of her style, Madeleine Doillon Toulouse paints a view of Tromsø and a fjord. Double-sided: on one side, Tromsø, the panel offers a view of snow-covered mountains plunging into a sea veiled in pale light. Pink clouds block the horizon. The whole presents muted tones, harmonised by the colour of the support that appears in the reserve work. On the other side, the colours are more vivid. The blue slopes slide towards a more azure sea reflecting the pink mountains; the same clouds loom large. Madeleine Doillon Toulouse's painting instils in us a feeling of bareness in the face of these empty landscapes bathed in pale light, which bring us back to ourselves and give us a sense of immanence. Man is virtually absent from her work. Her grasp of nature and her emphasis on its beauty remind us of its eternal superiority and perhaps its fragility, as if this were a message she wanted to convey.
