c. 2005

About the Item

World Trade Center memorial artwork by Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947). This piece is composed of multiple layers of quotes relating to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. The small text size creates various optical illusions, depending on the viewer's distance from the piece. It is mounted on a silver colored backing board. Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of other Grant pieces. Presented in a black wood frame with plexiglas. Paper size: 28.25"H x 20.5"W. Marc Foster Grant (American, b. 1947) is an artist from San Diego, CA who began showing his art at 13 years old. This led to becoming San Diego Museum’s Art Guild’s youngest member. He attended San Francisco State University in 1965 to study printmaking under John Ihle and Dennis Beal. Throughout college, Marc taught silk screening classes in his Potero Hill painting studio and worked at Museum West—an arm of New York Museum of Contemporary Crafts. Later he became the Display Director at Design Research International. He later attended the Brighton School of Art and Design in England for graduate work in printmaking. In 1973 Marc joined his wife Jeanne’s fledging dress business. The couple moved the enterprise from England, back to San Francisco where they opened their first shop, “Jeanne-Marc”, in North Beach. Under the same label they sold their small sportswear collection to high-end specialty stores including I. Magnin, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman as well as to stores in Europe and Japan. In 1991 both Marc and Jeanne were elected to the CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) Exhibitions and Awards: 1969, First Prize - the James D. Phelan Award for Graphics 1970, First Prize - New Paltz Intercollegiate Print Exhibition “Haircut? Yes, Please” - Victoria and Albert Museum (permanent collection) 1992 - Absolute Vodka’s Golden Shears Award for Fashion Design

Let Me Wrap My Dream - Contemporary Mixed Media Red + Green + Black + Grey
By Binay Sinha
Located in Gilroy, CA
"Let Me Wrap My Dream" is a contemporary artwork by Indian artist Binay Sinha. The imagery is a composition of many different textures, both artificial and natural. The bright red cloth is surrounded by shrubbery and an unknown manufactured texture. His surrealistic style captures the balance of flora & fauna, humanity, and city elements. Sinha's longing for the natural environment incorporates plants and natural textures into his works. This piece has a muted background with the central imagery vivid and colorful, commanding attention and consideration. From the artist: "Migration for employment from rural to urban areas has emerged. The history of migration is probably as long as human existence itself. Although the nature of migration has changed over time, factors that influence immigrants’ mental well-being largely remain the same. Migration for employment from rural to urban areas has emerged mainly due to agrarian stress in almost every part of India. This has raised many questions for me about what constitutes home and family. Is home a gunny sack...
