1940s Modernist Victor, Colorado Mountain Landscape Painting, Mining Town View

1942

About the Item

This original 1942 oil painting, titled "Victor, Colorado", by Martyl Suzanne Schweig (1918-2013), captures the rugged beauty of Colorado’s iconic mining landscape. The painting depicts a ghost town in the foreground with the majestic Rocky Mountains in the background, completed in vibrant shades of green, gold, and brown. Schweig painted this scene during a trip with fellow artist Adolph Dehn, as they toured and painted Colorado’s historic ghost towns. The painting is framed in a custom frame with outer dimensions of 31 ½ x 37 ½ inches, and the image size is 29 ¾ x 32 ½ inches. Victor, Colorado, also known as the "City of Gold Mines," is located at nearly 10,000 feet on the southwest side of Pikes Peak in the Cripple Creek Victor Mining District. This piece beautifully captures the essence of this historic town, once a bustling mining hub. The painting is in excellent vintage condition and would make a stunning addition to any collection. About the Artist: Martyl Suzanne Schweig (1918-2013) Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Martyl was an accomplished plein-air landscape painter known for her works in both realism and abstraction. She was raised in a family of artists, with her mother, Aimee Goldstone Schweig, also an artist. From a young age, Martyl exhibited natural talent, winning her first prize for drawing at age eleven at the St. Louis Art Museum. At 18, she sold a painting to George Gershwin, marking the beginning of her successful career. Throughout her life, Martyl’s works were collected by major museums, including the Smithsonian's National Museum of American Art and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. She was a prominent WPA (Works Progress Administration) muralist, with murals displayed in post offices and government buildings across the U.S., including the mural Wheat Workers in Russell, Kansas, and The Courageous Act of Cyrus Tiffany in Washington D.C. Martyl’s early training at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center in 1940 and 1941, with artists like Arnold Blanch and Boardman Robinson, helped shape her distinctive style. During this time, she painted scenes of Colorado’s ghost towns, including Victor, Colorado. Her work is a testament to her deep connection with the landscapes she painted and her lifelong passion for art. Known for her playful wit and enthusiasm, Martyl often said, "Are you still breathing?" when asked if she was still painting, reflecting her enduring love for art throughout her life. This piece offers a rare glimpse into Martyl’s artistic journey and captures the beauty of a now-forgotten era in the American West. Don't miss the opportunity to own a piece of this significant artist’s legacy.
