GREGORIO PRESTOPINO (1907-1984)
The Factory, c. 1935
Oil on canvas
30 x 24 inches
Signed at lower left: Prestopino
Born in the Little Italy section of New York City, Prestopino was awarded a scholarship to the National Academy of Design at the age of fourteen. Early in his career he came under the influence of the French Impressionists, but was soon drawn to the American realists of the Ashcan School, whose work led him directly to the study of urban life.
As a young man Prestopino set up his first studio in Harlem. During the 1930s his social realist paintings had an anecdotal quality in their description of everyday incidents of the working class, depicting the grit of city life – docks, laborers, vendors, Lower East Side streets.
Prestopino lived in Brooklyn for many years, spending summers at a farm near Clinton, New Jersey. At the farm Prestopino painted in the barn, while his wife - illustrator Elizabeth Dauber - had a studio in the house.
He moved to Roosevelt, New Jersey in 1949. Other artists who have lived in Roosevelt include Ben and Bernarda Shahn, their son Jonathan Shahn, Jacob Landau, David Stone Martin and his son, Stefan Martin...

Beech Tree at Hopetoun House, Vivid Landscape Oil Painting, Signed & dated 1932
Located in London, GB
Oil on canvas, signed lower right
Dated '1932' and inscribed on reverse
Image size: 28 x 22 inches (71 x 56 cm)
This vivid painting depicts a beech tree at Hopetoun House on the outskirts of Edinburgh. Hopetoun House is a remarkable stately home that has been home to the Hope family since the late 1600s - it is filled with stunning collections and sits in majestic grounds. However, the colour pallet, low view point and stylised forms in this painting have transformed this picturesque pastoral scene into something psychedelic, other-worldly and uncanny.

Harry Fabian Ware was a British post-impressionist artist who created bold artworks. Harry married fellow artist Armyne May Davidson on 1st August 1928 in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. They both exhibited at the New Gallery, Edinburgh on 9th November 1935 alongside fellow artists James Cowie...

"Saint Germain" Paris Cityscape by Konstantin Korovine
Located in Soquel, CA
"Saint Germain" Paris Cityscape by Konstantin Korovine
Lively Paris street scene by Konstantin Alexievitch Korovine (Constant Korovin) (Russian, 1861-1939). In a plaza outside a large building, people are going about their daily lives. In the foreground, a woman relaxes at a table with a few apples on it. A car passes behind the woman to the left. The painting is executed in Korovine's signature style - rapid, confident strokes that evoke the character of the scene without excess detail.
Signed in the lower left corner "Constant Korovine". And Titled with date and signature,
Location and dated: "Saint Germaine, September 13, 1931", and artist's name "Constant Korovine" written in lower right corner.
Two stamps on verso (one from Douane Centrale, Paris)
Board size: 13"H x 16"W
Konstantin Alekseyevich Korovin was a leading Russian Impressionist painter.
Konstantin was born in Moscow to a merchant family officially registered as peasants of Vladimir gubernia. His father, Aleksey Mikhailovich Korovin, earned a university degree and was more interested in arts and music than in the family business established by Konstantin's grandfather. Konstantin's older brother, Sergey Korovin, was a notable realist painter. Konstantin's relative Illarion Pryanishnikov was also a prominent painter of the time and a teacher at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture.
In 1875 Korovin entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he learned from Vasily Perov and Alexei Savrasov. His brother Sergey was already a student of the School. During their scholar years the Korovins became friends with their fellow students Valentin Serov and Isaac Levitan...

Located in New York, NY
Henry MacGinnis, (1875 - 1962)
Baker Pond, New Hampshire, 1930
Oil on canvas
30 x 25 inches
Signed lower right
Henry Ryan MacGinnis, 1875-1962, was born in Indiana and began his art studies under the eminent Hoosier artists T.C. Steele, J.O. Adams and William Forsyth. One of his earliest exhibitions was in 1896, when he showed his work with other notable Hoosier artists such as T.C. Steele, J. Ottis Adams, R.B. Gruelle, William Forsyth, Otto Stark and Clarence Ball.
In 1900, MacGinnis left Indiana to study in Europe. For five years, he painted and studied in Paris and Munich, where he won Honorable Mention from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He was a member of the Audubon Artists, Hoosier Salon, Salmagundi Club, and Allied Artists.
In 1908, soon after MacGinnis returned to the states, William Merritt Chase, chairman of the Exhibition Committee of the 19th Annual Exhibition of the Art Club in Philadelphia, selected the MacGinnis painting New Hampshire Hills for an important exhibit. The show included paintings from other artists such as Mary Cassatt, Ernest Lawson, Childe Hassam and William Merritt Chase.
A broad look at MacGinnis' work suggests a concern with impressionism; however, for the most part, MacGinnis stayed within the realm of realism often softened by an impressionistic approach. As mentioned, MacGinnis began painting with the Hoosier artists in Indiana, primarily focusing on landscapes from that region.
In 1924, MacGinnis moved to Trenton, New Jersey where he both taught and continued to paint. He focused on painting portraits and landscapes near the Delaware River and New Hope, Pennsylvania region. During this period, he also painted many landscapes and seascapes in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Cape Breton...

Church Paris Oil Painting by Emil Kosa Jr.
Located in Pasadena, CA
Emil Kosa, Jr., N.A. (1903-1968) Born: Paris, France; Studied: Academy of Fine Arts (Prague), Ecole des Beaux Arts (Paris), Chouinard Art Institute (Los Angeles); Member: National Academy of Design, American Watercolor Society, California Water Color Society, Philadelphia Water Color Club, New York Water Color Club. Emil Kosa, Jr. received art instruction and music lessons at a very early age. When he was in his late teens, he had to decide between being a professional musician or artist. He chose art, but his family and instructors believed he could have been a famous musician had he chosen that occupation.
In the 1920s, he moved to California, but returned to France several times to continue his art education. He received traditional painting instruction from Pierre Laurens and studied non-objective painting with Frank Kupka. After settling in California in 1928, he worked as a mural artist and operated a business with his father that produced decorative art for churches and auditoriums. When that line of work was slow, he took on portrait commissions and sold fine art paintings through local galleries.
In the early 1930s, Kosa became friends with Millard Sheets and with Sheet’s encouragement, began aggressively pursuing a national reputation as a California watercolor artist...

A founder of the Provincetown Art Association and one of the original Provincetown Printers, Tod Lindenmuth was a semi-abstract painter and graphic artist who did much to promote modernist styles. Although he was much influenced by Abstract Expressionism, his subject matter was realistic enough to be recognizable. He did linoleum cuts and was one of the first to work with that medium, and towards the end of his life, he experimented with collage. In the 1930s, he had commissions for the Public Works of Art Project and the Works Progress Administration.
Lindenmuth was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He studied with Robert Henri at the New York School of Art in Manhattan, and in Provincetown with E. Ambrose Webster and George Elmer Browne.
He first exhibited in Provincetown in 1915, and between 1917 and 1928 served on the jury for the Provincetown Art Association’s ‘First Modernistic Exhibition”. He exhibited regularly with the Society of Independent Artists in New York.
