"Future Shadow" is of a scene in the woods. This scene is of no particular place, but rather his interpretation and compilation of various places he has visited. As a painter, I examine how the depiction of light contributes to our experience of paintings. The portrayal of light helps a painting to convey the atmosphere and mood of a scene, and is much of what enables a painting to convey depth and realism. Our perception of lighting features occurs largely through pathways in the brain that carry only black and white information, pathways which are distinct from areas that encode the colors and details we use to delineate specific objects. By painting in grayscale, I try to interact specifically with this region of our visual system, with the hope of conveying some of the spaciousness and emotional significance that light can imbue on scenes. Light, whether as the crisp contrast of a back-lit forest or the gray haze of an industrial landscape, is what defines a scene. Its power to communicate the feel of a place is the principle subject of my paintings. The Blue Azul Collection...

I love the idea of suggesting a landscape, but then abstracting the subject and using the materials in such a way that the texture and details made by the paint, and the grain of the wood panel, are as important if not more so than the subject itself." "True North - Identity" is a worms-eye view of a brilliant blue sky with a maze of distinctive clouds. The surreal quality of the imagery makes the viewer question reality. Are the clouds actual clouds or made by some other means? Are those fluffy clouds behind the bare branches or mountains? The ellipsed edges confirm the scene as an inner vision rather than a window on the world. The painting itself is painted on a handmade wooden panel with beautifully finished edges so no frame is needed. The Earth’s “Magnetic North” moves over time according to polar shifts; flux and correction is enabled by polarity. In these paintings (Privilege, Orientation, Belief, Identity, Equity), I use compositional elements referencing nautical com- passes to suggest that society must navigate not within systems, but naturally through positive relationships and change. I hope that my art represents our present day - but also imparts a dreamful glimpse of hope and faith within. Explanation: A magnetic compass does not point toward the true North Pole of the Earth. Rather, it more closely points toward the North Magnetic Pole of the Earth. The North Magnetic Pole is currently located in northern Canada. It wanders in an elliptical path each day, and moves, on the average, more than forty meters northward each day. Evidence indicates that the North Magnetic Pole has wandered over much of the Earth's surface in the 4.5 billion years since the Earth formed. Sarah Winkler is a British born, American contemporary landscape painter who has lived most of her life abroad in countries such as Malawi, Africa and Brunei, Borneo. She has lived in the US since 1989 and has spent over two decades living and working in California and Colorado. She studied Art and Earth Science at William Paterson University and combines both subjects in her landscape and environmental artworks. The artist is best known for her monumentally scaled, color rich, luminous paintings that interpret the geological storied past and eventful present of the formation of the American wilderness landscape. She incorporates ground water, crushed rock and materials from the landscape in her paintings to create moments of connection, exploration and discovery. Winkler has exhibited in solo and group shows nationally in galleries, regional museums and art fairs since 2004. Her work was recently showcased at the LA Art Fair, Art Aspen and the Jackson Hole Art Fine Art Fair. In 2019, Winkler was selected by US Ambassador, John Pommersheim and the curators of the Art in Embassies program to participate in a 3-year International exhibition at the Ambassador’s residence in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Winkler was also invited to exhibit at the Colorado Governor’s Residence in Denver. Her artworks are in many private, public and corporate collections. Throughout this piece Pylant explores the concept of impossible spaces, by creating urban scenes that blend into nature, creating portals within the artwork.
