About the Item

17th Century Flemish Painting "A bustling scene of fishermen, merchants and visitors in a peaceful and picturesque port village” This intriguing painting offers a wonderful and realistic glimpse into life during the late 17th century. To the right, we can see merchants and fishermen walking along the docks and unloading merchandise. In the far distance, large houses and towers are dotted along the shoreline. The longer one looks at it, the more one discovers, inviting you to daydream about the lives lived long ago. Mathys Schoevaerts, also known as Matheus Schoevaerdts, was a Flemish painter born around 1665. He is known for his landscape paintings, often featuring lively scenes with numerous figures and detailed depictions of nature and architecture. Schoevaerdts' work is characteristic of the Flemish tradition of landscape painting, honouring the legacy of the Brueghel-dynasty. As with Jan Brueghel I and II, a common thread of their landscapes is the bucolic sense of happiness, and their small figures in anecdotic, detailed poses set against a backdrop of a pleasing landscape with finely composed buildings. Measurements: The total dimensions are approx. 40 by 51 cm and the canvas alone measures 27 by 38 cm. Provenance: German private collection (with faint inscription on the reverse Hans Graf)

17th century German portrait of the wine merchant Caspar Roemerskirchen at the age of 26 in 1628, Gottfried von Wedig also known as Gotthardt Wedig (attr.) This highly decorative portrait depicts the 26 year old Caspar Roemerskirchen, wearing an intricate jacket made of a luxurious black fabric, which is stiffened and shaped to perfectly fit his silhouette. It is adorned with an opulent collar, which at the time was a true status symbol, worn to emphasise the refined class and social status of the sitter. In his hands he is holding luxurious soft leather gloves. The vivid green drapery and table cloth add further vivacity to the portrait. His ice blue eyes appear to be shimmering with a life-like quality. After extensive archival research, we were able to discover that our sitter was a wine merchant; what joyous stories he must have to tell! Gottfried de Wedig...
