About the Item

Matthijs Schoevaerdt (1663-1703) Genre scene Oil on canvas, 30 x 43 cm - Framed, 44 x 56 cm The present painting can be traced by stylistic and formal figures to the hand of the Flemish painter and engraver Matthijs Schoevaerdt (1663 - 1703), who specialized mainly in genre scenes and large landscapes animated by small figures. Biographical data pertaining to the artist's youth are scarce: in fact, the earliest news about him is from 1682 when he entered as an apprentice in the workshop of landscape painter Adriaen Frans Boudewijns. After an initial period of training, in 1690 he was admitted to the Guild of St. Luke in Brussels, becoming its dean in a very short time (from 1692 to 1696). Particularly popular with patrons throughout his career, Matthijs Schoevaerdts produced compositions that reflected the bourgeois collecting taste in vogue in the Netherlands and Flanders in the second half of the 17th century. His early vedutistic works, dominated by anecdotal and delicately painted scenes with peasants intent on traveling, sailing, and participating in festivals and markets. His early works were, in fact, inspired by market scenes and picturesque moments of everyday life characterized by the muted colors typical of the works of Jan Brueghel the Elder, which influenced an entire generation of artists (among them see Johann Graf and Philippe Le Clerc). During a second, more mature phase, his sunny landscapes began to introduce the artistic innovations proposed by the so-called Bamboccianti School, leading him to paint port views and "capricci" with Italian-style ruins more and more frequently (although he never visited the peninsula): these were imaginary views embellished with fanciful ruined buildings often decorated with foliage to emphasize their dilapidated state. The work under consideration returns the viewer to a lenticular vision of a suburban town, animated by countless characters from different walks of life busy with a variety of activities. The palette is set on the delicate tones of blues and greens with the addition of the ringing hues of robes. The scene records some of the most distinctive elements of the artist's language: a deep openness in the landscape, sunk into the distance between dwellings and the horizon, as well as typical formalisms in dealing with shrubs, crowds of citizens and architecture.
