An original copy in oil by Maurice Newman of Jean-François Millet's masterpiece, "The Potato Farmers." Jean-François Millet was one of France's most famous painters and a founder of the Barbizon School of rural landscape painting. Signed lower right. Framed in 2.5 inch wood frame with antiqued gold finish. Image size: 29 x 36 inches . Frame size: 34.5 x 40.5 inches. Jean-François Millet was raised in the area of France known as the old province of Normandy. He was brought up in an environment hard outdoor labor. After studying to become a painter, he devoted his art to local farmers working the land and in their everyday life. His subjects were often taken directly from his surroundings or from memories from his youth. One of Milllet's most famous paintings, The Potato Harvest, drew international acclaim at the Exposition Universelle in 1867. Renowned for his Realist subject matter Millet was moved by social injustice to paint peasants and agricultural laborers, capturing both the poverty and dignity of rural French life. “The human side of art is what touches me most,” he once said. Though Millet was considered a socialist revolutionary by much of the establishment, his painting entitled The Winnower (1848), was lauded by one critic as possessing “everything it takes to horrify the bourgeois.” Millet exhibited his work at the Paris Salon in 1848. In 1849, he moved to Barbizon, where he painted many of his most famous works, and, with Théodore Rousseau, Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, and others, founded the Barbizon School of landscape painters. In one of his most famous works, The Gleaners (1857), women and children are depicted bathed in Millet’s characteristic soft, golden light (meant to convey the sanctity of their relationship to the land) and gleaning grain from the fields following the harvest. Maurice Newman Maurice Newman was born in 1898 in Lithuania. He emigrated to South Africa and attended the Johannesburg School of Art in 1914 - 1916. He emigrated to the United States where he continued his art studies at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and the Woodbury School of Art. During the Second World War he was employed as a model maker by the Federal Works of Art Defense Project from 1940 to 1942. He also worked at the Engineer Research Development Laboratories at Fort Belvoir Army Post constructing dioramas and typographical bombing maps. Following his work for the government he devoted himself entirely to painting and sculpture. 1963 he was commissioned in 1963 to create a large-scale Holocaust Memorial Sculpture in Memory of "Six Million Jewish Martyrs" for the Jewish Community Center in Kansas City, Missouri.
