Circa 1915
About the Item
Here for your consideration is an outstanding oil on canvas painting by Max Silbert. Signed lower right. Circa 1915. Recently professionally cleaned with no restorations. The frame is not original but of the period. It has been adjusted to fit this painting. A inch and a half of each side of the painting will not be visible if you choose to use this frame. Top to bottom the painting fits as it should. Overall measurements framed 38 by 44 inches. Provenance: A Sarasota Florida estate.
Max Silbert was foremost a Russian genre painter, but later became a French citizen. He was a student of both Jean-Léon Gérôme and Albert Maignan. He first exhibited his works at the "Salon des Artistes Français" in 1907 and was awarded a silver medal in 1920. Silbert and many other artists from the turn of the 20th century flocked to the remote region of Brittany on the north-western coast of France to paint people and countryside landscapes.
Brittany (Bretagne) has always been fiercely independent; indeed it only became part of France in the 16th century. Today, facing the North Sea and the mighty Atlantic, the Bretons still look outwards towards the rest of the world rather than towards Paris.
It’s a stunningly beautiful region running from the Côte du Granit Rose (the red granite coast) with its pink rock formations and wonderful beaches in the north to the prehistoric remains at Carnac and the glorious islands just off the mainland in the south. It has history and great towns, superb food, and top events.
Brittany is also the land of myths and legends with a separate language where those stories are celebrated. It's a place for romantics and fairy tales, many of which appear at the great Breton annual festivals that gather Celts and like-minded people from all over the world.

"Serene Sail"
By Warren W. Sheppard
Located in Southampton, NY
This oil on canvas painting was done by the American artist, Warren Sheppard. Signed twice lower left. One signature over another. See signatures photo's. Circa 1920 to 1930. Recently lightly cleaned and gold leaf frame custom made for the painting. Overall 27 by 37 inches. Some craquelure; mainly in sky. Otherwise, good condition.
A student of Dutch marine artist, Mauritz de Haas, Warren Sheppard built two successful careers around his love of the sea: marine painting and yacht designing. He was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, a town on the Delaware River below Philadelphia, which has been associated with ships and shipping since the earliest Colonial times. His father was a sea captain and the young Sheppard took many voyages with his father to make artistic studies. He learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City in addition to his studies with de Haas. In 1879, he spent four months sketching Mediterranean port cities including Gibraltar, Genoa, Naples and Messina in Sicily. Between 1888 and 1893, he also studied painting in Venice and Paris. By the time he was in his mid-thirties, he had established himself as a successful illustrator and painter. The yachts he painted were the most lavish of his day, owned by the wealthiest of men. He was an expert in the design and rigging of ships of present and earlier times. His work was highly regarded for its authenticity as well as its artistic merit.Sheppard was also an expert navigator and sailed a number of famous yachts in races. Twice he was to command Tamerlane when it won the New York to Bermuda run. His book, Practical Navigation, was used for many years by the United States Naval Academy...

Edmond Heuze
1883-1967
Edmond Heuzé was a painter, pastellist, watercolourist, and lithographer. His birth name was Amédée Le Trouvé.
He was born in Paris, the son of a tailor and a seamstress. Heuzé wanted to be an artist from early childhood, and refused to follow his father into the tailoring profession. When he was 11, His parents moved to Montmartre, and it was there, in rue Cortot, that the thirteen-year-old Edmond Heuzé and his boyhood friend André Utter met Suzanne Valadon, whom Utter would later marry.
Heuzé moved into an attic room in 8, rue Cortot, with another friend, the young Russian sculptor Laxine. For two years they studied under Valadon, until Laxine entered the atelier of Fernand Cormon at the Beaux-Arts; Laxine was soon to kill himself. Edmond Heuzé too studied under Cormon, but flounced out when Cormon made fun of his large nose. Discouraged, Heuzé took up a tailoring job at the department store La Samaritaine. But when his portrait of Suzanne Valadon was accepted by the 1902 Salon d'Automne, he resolved to devote himself to art.
To support himself, Heuzé took a job as a dancer at the Moulin Rouge, where he danced with La Goulue. For two years he entered dance competitions across Europe under the name Williams. He also taught the painter Maurice Utrillo, who was the son of Suzanne Valadon. In 1908, Heuzé had his first solo exhibition, at the galerie Berthe Weill. The following year he went to Saint Petersburg, where he was the curator of the art collection of Grand Duke Nicolas.
On the outbreak of WWI Edmond Heuzé returned to Paris to join up, but was only mobilized for a few months. In Paris he survived doing odd jobs in Les Halles. Continuing with his own art, Heuzé also acted as an intermediary between collectors and artists such as Picasso, Vlaminck, and Valadon. This led to Heuzé being appointed artistic director of the galerie Sagot in rue Lafitte.
In 1920 Heuzé exhibited at Bernheim alongside Maurice Asselin, Emily Charmy, and Lucien Mainssieux...
