Michele Zalopany
Volcano

1988

$18,000

About

Executed in black, grey and brown, this monumental charcoal and pastel painting conveys the mythic drama and beauty of an active volcano. Rising in the shape of a wide, low cone, the volcano emits a plume of ash and smoke, blended to velvet in the artist’s characteristic style. The land around is gnarled: low, tangled brush, or sharp, rough pumiced terrain. Zalopany excels at painting with light, often abstracting large areas of light or shadow in a composition. Here, she paints with shadow, the mass of smoke assumes even more volume and weight than the volcano. The two meet, forming an hourglass shape, and as much as the smoke curls upward, it seems also to twist and melt into ashen rivulets. Charcoal and pastel on paper mounted on canvas 63 x 48 / 160 x 122 cm Born in 1955 in Detroit Michigan, Michele Zalopany is a contemporary American artist best known for her large-scale watercolor and pastel paintings based on photographs found in digital picture collections, old books, and flea markets, etc. Found photographs and film screen shots that had originally served other purposes -- family snapshots, police photos, real estate, travel documentation -- when rendered, directly from the image, with traditional art materials, take on additional meanings, such as socio-psychological-political content. She exhibited in the 1989 Whitney Biennial and her work is included in more than 25 institutions including the Museum of Fine Art, Boston; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Yokohama Museum, Japan; Royal College of Art, London.
