Nick Quirke
Embers of the Horizon-original abstract oil painting-contemporary Art

2025

About the Item

This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online. In Embers of the Horizon, Nick Quirke presents an arresting interpretation of nature’s grandeur, where land, sky, and water merge into a symphony of bold, emotive color. This oil on canvas piece exemplifies his contemporary abstracted landscape style, balancing expressive brushwork with a keen understanding of light and atmosphere. The horizon glows like a burning ember, pulsating with the remnants of a setting sun, infusing the entire scene with warmth and intensity. The palette is electrifying, dominated by deep blues, purples, and rich magentas that frame the sky’s radiant core. The fiery streaks of orange and yellow break through the darkness like molten gold, reflecting upon the water’s surface in a shimmering display of light. The landscape is suggested rather than explicitly defined, with distant hills softly emerging from the background, adding to the sense of vastness and wonder. Quirke’s brushwork is dynamic, alternating between smooth, blended transitions and bold, impasto-like strokes that add texture and depth. The juxtaposition of intense saturation with softer, atmospheric blending creates a sense of movement, as if the scene is shifting before the viewer’s eyes. This painting is not just a depiction of nature—it’s an experience, an invitation to step into a world where color and emotion intertwine. Artist Biography: Nick's journey in Fine Art has been a lifelong pursuit, beginning with his studies at the Byam Shaw School of Art and Design, now part of Central St Martins in London. Following his time in the capital, Nick relocated to Bristol, where he further honed his craft and earned a BETEC Diploma in Fine Art at the renowned Spike Island. Experienced in showcasing his artwork at prestigious galleries and events, Nick's artistic passion revolves around capturing the play of light in the sky and the reflections on water. This fascination has inspired him to cultivate a distinctive style characterized by bold, vibrant colors and an impasto technique that brings his canvases to life with explosive energy. In his latest works, Nick ventures into exploring Graffiti style paint techniques, skillfully blended with traditional oil paints. This innovative approach allows him to push the boundaries of his artistic expression while maintaining the depth and richness that define his artistic vision. Sailing to the Sun, Reflection in the Water, Oil , Abstract Landscape, Nature
Located in Houston, TX
Sailing into the Sun is an abstract landscape painting. It is oil on canvas. It is gallery wrapped so there is no need for a frame. On a summer morning in 1993 a 22 years old young came to Florida from a small old town in the central area of Cuba called Santa Clara. In his bag, he brought no more than two valuable things, his worn-out brushes and a great dream. The dream to one day become a professional artist in this new land that welcomed him with open arms. Captivated by his love for the beauty of the Landscapes, his last works are what he sees even in the most common scenes: the close relationship of life and who we are with the natural world around us that asks us to respect and care for it. Artist Statement: " I like to scrutinize in the simple things, sometimes it is there where the lost painting is waiting to be found by the painter's eyes. The landscape painting gives me the opportunity to establish a close relationship with the natural world and humbly capture on a canvas a little of its beauty listening to its voice that reminds us how valuable we are and how much we should love it".
