About the Item
Oskar Lycke was a Swedish painter from Sundsvall whose work captured the quiet poetry of northern landscapes around the turn of the 20th century. Although largely self-taught, he was determined from an early age to become an artist and managed to support himself and his family entirely through his painting.
After moving to Stockholm at the age of twenty, Lycke endured several difficult years before finding success with exhibitions in cities across Sweden from Norrköping and Malmö to Stockholm, as well as abroad, including in Copenhagen and New York. He frequently travelled in search of new motifs, living for periods in Delsbo, Räfsnäs in the Stockholm archipelago, and later returning to his native Sundsvall.
Lycke’s paintings reflect a blend of national romanticism and realism, characteristic of Swedish art around 1900. His subjects was serene lakes, forests, and rural settings which reveal both a deep attachment to the Norrland landscape and a sensitivity to atmosphere and light.
In Evening by the Lake, Lycke captures the stillness of twilight over calm waters, where soft reflections meet the dark silhouettes of the shoreline. Though modest in scale, the painting conveys his lyrical handling of tone and the timeless beauty of the northern landscape that earned him lasting affection as one of Sundsvall’s beloved artists.

Oscar Lycke was a Swedish painter best known for his evocative depictions of the northern landscape. Born in Sundsvall in 1877, he devoted his life to capturing the forests, rivers, and light of Norrland in works that combine national romanticism with a strong sense of realism. His paintings remain beloved today for their vivid atmosphere and heartfelt connection to the Nordic environment. Largely self-taught, Lycke showed artistic talent from an early age. After receiving mixed encouragement from his schoolteachers, he left Sundsvall at the age of 20 to pursue a career as an artist in Stockholm. The early years were difficult—he had no formal training and struggled to make a living—but his dedication never wavered. Over time, he gained recognition and began exhibiting in cities across Sweden, including Malmö and Norrköping, as well as internationally in Copenhagen and New York. Lycke was constantly on the move, traveling through Sweden in search of new landscapes and inspiration. He lived at different times in places like Delsbo and Hudiksvall, and during the war years of 1915–1918, he settled in Stockholm, spending summers with his family in Räfsnäs in the Stockholm archipelago. Eventually, he returned to his native Sundsvall, where he continued to paint until the end of his life. His artistic style reflects the cultural mood of early 20th-century Swedish art. Like many of his contemporaries, Lycke was drawn to national themes, finding beauty and identity in the Swedish countryside. His landscapes often depict the shifting light of dawn or dusk, dense spruce forests, and quiet paths glowing with natural color. The emotional resonance of his work, rooted in both memory and place, made him a favorite especially among those with ties to the north. Oscar Lycke passed away in 1927 at the age of 50, after a long period of illness and declining vision. A memorial exhibition at Sundsvalls museum in the late 1970s reaffirmed his significance, especially as a painter of northern Sweden. Today, Oscar Lycke remains a cherished figure in early 20th-century Swedish art, remembered for his lyrical portrayals of Norrland landscapes and his ability to transform everyday nature into something timeless.

After Sunset by the Lake, 1889 by Swedish Artist Anton Genberg, 1889
Located in Stockholm, SE
Among the treasured classic arts we offer for sale is this stunning painting by the artist Anton Genberg. Born in 1862 to Pehr Jonsson and Anna Genberg, he left an indelible mark on the art world through his magnificent creations. Genberg's life was colored with a passion for exploration, study, and artistic expression.
His artistic journey began with studies at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1882 to 1884, during which he also honed his skills at Oscar Törnås' private painting school. He furthered his education under the tutelage of Per Daniel Holm at the prestigious Konstakademien from 1884 to 1889. During these years, Genberg's exceptional talent was recognized with numerous scholarships and medals.
Our painting, dated 1889, transports us to a captivating scene just some minutes after sunset. The canvas is imbued with a beautiful golden glow as the sun's last rays kiss the sky. Amidst a serene lake, the heavenly light reflects, painting the water's surface with mesmerizing shades of purple. In the distance, the landscape is dominated by a mountainous forest, while in the foreground, a stretch of land adorned with bushes creates a sense of depth. The impressionist style comes alive through Genberg's swift brushstrokes, reminiscent of the masterful techniques employed by Rembrandt, with branches delicately etched using the opposite end of the brush.
Genberg's fame as a landscape artist was solidified through his enchanting depictions of snow-laden landscapes from Norrland, particularly the majestic "fjällen" (mountains). His art also captured the allure of Stockholm, Dalarna, and his birthplace in Jämtland. Notably, his masterpiece "Vinterafton" earned him a place of honor at the esteemed Nationalmuseum.
Beyond his creative pursuits, Anton Genberg was actively involved in the art community. He served as the vice-chairman of the Svenska konstnärernas förening from 1913 to 1918 and held a position on the board of Sveriges allmänna konstförening from 1906 to 1939. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he was elected as a member of the Konstakademien in 1922.
Throughout his life, Genberg resided in various places, leaving behind a trail of artistic inspiration. From 1916 to 1924, he lived in the enchanting Villa Wallbeck-Hansen, a masterpiece of national romanticism...
