About the Item

A sublime landscape painting by the Finnish painter Oskar Elenius (1884-1965). Signed O. Elenius and dated 1917. The motif, an early summer evening with a blossoming Rowan tree in the foreground, and a lake behind, in the distance are trees creating a background. The evenings in late spring and early summers in Scandinavia are very bright because the sun sets very late, around 11pm in the middle of Scandinavia, up north, it sets after midnight. The painting is probably painted in May or June 1917 when the Rowan tree is blossoming. The frame is period and original. Oskar Elenius was a Finnish painter and also a teacher of arts. His earlier works are considered the best. When he painted this painting he was 33 years old. Elenius studied at the Central School of Art and Design 1904–1907 and at the Finnish Art Association's drawing school 1906–1907. He participated in the Finnish Artists' Exhibition in 1907 and 1908 and in 1908 he won 1st prize in the picture competition of the Young Finnish Kalevala artist exhibition. He participated in many more exhibitions and got god reviews by the critics. Study trips was made to Germany, Austria, Italy, and Scandinavia. Between 1920–1930 Elenius worked as a drawing teacher at the Central School of Arts and Crafts. From 1930, he worked as a teacher for painting and design. His paintings are quite rare, probably he did not paint very much during his years as a teacher. The Rowan tree, (Sorbus aucuparia), is a tree in the rose family. Its leaves, flowering in spring and red berries in autumn are characteristic and easily identifiable signs. The rowan never grows very large and is, as Linné wrote, "a tree that never grows old". It grows quickly but rarely lives more than 50–60 years. Already during the end of the ice age 12000 BC, rowan had immigrated and was established in south Scandinavia. Around 4,500 BC it was spread even up in north Scandinavia. The tree has long been considered sacred in the Nordics, and called "Thor's help" as it is believed to have once saved Thor and Loki from drowning in a river. It is often mentioned in folk tales and fairy tales.
