Paul Emile Pissarro
Ombre et Soleil (Shadow and Sun)

Circa 1960

About the Item

The fifth and youngest son of Camille Pissarro, the great Paul-Émile Pissarro painted this vivid oil on canvas. His unique blend of breathtaking color and a highly modern technique are fully evident in the work, which presents a solitary figure in the shadow of a tree. Painted near the end of his career, this painting fully realizes the painterly ideals of Pissarro and the Post-Impressionist movement. Surrounded by art his entire life, the youngest Pissarro inevitably began drawing at an early age. At the age of 15, the artist attended a college in Gisors, but left after a few months in order to join his father on painting trips to Le Havre, Dieppe and Rouen. For the last few years of Camille's life the family lived in Paris, where Pissarro attended a private art academy. Following his father's death in 1903, Pissarro returned to Eragny with his mother. Monet, who lived only twenty miles away at Giverny and who was one of Camille's closest friends, became his tutor, guardian and friend. Monet was a constant source of encouragement, giving him lessons in painting and in horticulture. In 1905 he exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Indépendants, showing an Impressionist landscape, Bords de l'Epte ý Eragny. By the 1920s, Pissarro had become an established Post-Impressionist artist in his own right, and it was during the late 1920s and early 1930s that he reached the peak of his artistic development. He abandoned the pure colors and divided brush stroked of his father’s Impressionism, using instead a more vibrant palette, broader gestures and bolder strokes. As apparent in the present composition, his application of paint became tighter and thicker, almost expressionistic in style. In 1967, Pissarro had his first one-man show in the United States at Wally Findlay Galleries in New York. This led to widespread recognition and a degree of professional success that few artists in the Pissarro family enjoyed in their lifetime. Since his death in 1972, his paintings have been exhibited around the world, with interest in his work continuing to grow. This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Leila Pissarro. Circa 1960 Canvas: 15 1/8” high x 18 1/8” wide Frame:20 5/8” high x 23 5/8” wide

  • Dimanche au Champ de Course (Deauville) (Sunday at the Racetrack)
    By Hughes Claude Pissarro
    Located in New Orleans, LA
French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro offers a unique perspective of the racetrack in Deauville in this exceptional pastel painting. The spectators are as much his subject as the sport in this artistic tribute to a leisurely Sunday at the tracks. Following the impressionist tradition of his father and grandfather before him, Pissarro infuses this pastel with dynamic light and vibrant colors. Entitled Dimanche au Champ de Course (Deauville), it showcases the artist's highly distinctive and sophisticated style. Hailing from a long lineage of painters, Pissarro's artistic talents were cultivated at an early age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the École du Louvre and École Normale Supérieure. A 1959 White House commission to paint the portrait of President...

  • Popcorn Vendor, Syracuse By Edmund Quincy
    By Edmund Quincy
    Located in New Orleans, LA
Edmund Quincy 1903-1997 | American Popcorn Vendor, Syracuse Signed "Quincy" (lower left) Oil on canvas An accomplished painter who lived and worked in both New England and abroad, Edmund Quincy’s body of work captured both European and American cities with a unique sense of nostalgia and charm. Born in Biarritz, France, and educated in the United States, Quincy was the descendant of three Boston mayors and related to President John Quincy Adams. Many of Quincy’s works render Boston in a nuanced light that attracted critics both at home and abroad. In fact, a critic writing for the Paris edition of the Chicago Tribune wrote that Quincy was, “one of the young American painters who are helping to destroy the legend that America is not paintable....In other words, Edmond Quincy’s canvases help to prove to Europeans that America has an atmosphere and a past…” Still, much of Quincy’s oeuvre captures idyllic scenes from his time spent abroad, mostly in Paris and later Italy where he settled with his wife. Popcorn Vendor, Syracuse illustrates Quincy’s ability to capture a sense of place in his work. The work renders a whimsical scene of a popcorn vendor in a carriage wagon. Though Quincy lived both in the United States and abroad, this scene likely captures a local confectioner working in Syracuse Sicily, a beautiful Italian seaside town and not the city in upstate New York. Quincy’s scene emanates with nostalgia and one can almost smell the wafting aromas of freshly popped popcorn through the frame. Quincy’s colorful scene perfectly exemplifies his unique and charming oeuvre. Born in France in 1903 to Josiah and Ellen Quincy, Edmund Quincy took his place among one of the oldest and most venerated American families, which included several mayors of Boston, a Harvard president, Abigail Adams...
