The scenes are almost idential, with small differences to the figures, so you may choose which version you wish to frame. The Cathedral of our Lady is seen in the background, with a square in the foreground - busy with colourful figures going about their daily business, and some vehicles.
Belgium and Luxembourg were two of Rowe's favourite destinations for his painting trips overseas. Often incorporating figures into his work, his style is very similar to Thomas Morley's paintings of French and Belgian market town scenes.
Signed front lower right on each side, dated '50. Inscribed as Antwerp. This work forms part of a watercolour collection we currently hold by Rowe.

This Danish Impressionist artist first studied with the classically-trained Academician, Laurits Ring and, subsequently, with the notable Danish photographer and Impressionist painter, Rostrup Boyesen. After an influential study trip to Paris in 1930, Hertz continued his formal studies at the Charlottenborg Academy before moving from Copenhagen to the idyllic countryside outside Gudhjem. There, he became a founding, and leading, member of the Bornholm School and his work came to exemplify the group's lyrical portrayal of landscapes, painted in a loose and painterly, Impressionist style that can often border on abstraction.
From 1930-1941, Hertz traveled and studied widely, including in France, Holland, German, Norway and Sweden. He was the recipient of numerous prizes and juried awards including the August Schiøtt scholarship (1948) and the Frederik Sødring prize (1939). He also exhibited widely and with success including, for many years, at the Royal Danish Academy's Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (from 1937), Sweden (1980), Bornholm Art Museum (1985) and the Vejen Art Museum (1983). Mogens Hertz is well-listed in art biographical reference works including Benezit.

A substantial, Post-Impressionist oil landscape showing a view of the Mediterranean with an orange tree and blossoming apple trees in the foreground, framing a view across cultivated fields towards the azure ocean beneath a clouded lilac and ivory sky. A charming and robust work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical and painterly brushwork, elegantly expressing it here in a gentle palette of moss, teal, lavender and soft pastels.
Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and most importantly to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a great stylistic impact on his later work. His palette grew brighter, and his earlier defined contours were subsumed into the nuances of light. We are pleased to offer a dazzling work from the artist's late period, that exemplifies these later qualities of his mature work, harmoniously capturing the warmth and color of a southern summer landscape.
