About the Item

In this work Peter Durieux shows his love for the landscapes, and also his capability in composition, tonality and style. Beautiful and powerful at the same time. Drawing is watching. The paintings and drawings of Durieux come about in various steps. Peter studies his landscapes while he draws there. 'Drawing is looking', he likes to tell his students at the Classical Academy in Groningen. Twice a year he travels to, among others, 'Le Coulet', a small hamlet in the French Ardêche. The surroundings of the hamlet, the villages and landscapes in the immediate vicinity have been recorded by Peter Durieux for years. Annoying Peter finds it in no way to always work in this same environment. During one of the many conversations I had with Peter, he once said: I walk and cycle less and less. In the past, when I searched for a place that I thought fit to draw, I could spend half a day doing that. I needed the bike or walked a long way and after a lot of searching I found such a place. Nowadays, I just have to leave the house at my guest address. I see much more than before. Sometimes, if the light has disappeared from my composition, I only have to turn a quarter of a turn for another drawing. Peter works on a drawing for several days. He also works on several drawings at once. After all, the changing and rotating sunlight is a very important part of his composition. In the morning he is in a different place than in the afternoon. In the composition a lot of light is visible, but often little air. It is wonderful to see how the light strikes the landscape from the sky. Often there is still a sign of habitation somewhere in the drawing. A house, a wall, a fence, pavements or a staircase. People are not there to see, but the presence is palpable. The light changes throughout the day, it is amazing how Peter Durieux can even show in a drawing whether the spring, autumn, morning light or afternoon light is what we see.

LANDSCAPE V - Contemporary Atmospheric Landscape, Modern Nature Painting
By Grzegorz Wójcik
Located in Salzburg, AT
A few words of the artist about his art: When i painting landscapes, I usually choose simple geometric arrangements, contrasts of verticals and levels. I juxtapose the smooth surface of the sky with the rough texture of earth or grass. I paint symmetrical reflections in water and rhythmic repetitions of trees. Even an ordinary, seemingly uninteresting fragment of the suburban landscape hides a beauty that I want to see and then transfer to the canvas. I am inspired by nature because it contains a hidden secret of existence. For me, painting it is a reflection on life and passing away. It is an attempt to capture the imperceptible essence, to paint what cannot be seen. I think that my paintings can be a respite, an antidote for a man tired of technology, constant rush, hustle and bustle of the city. Grzegorz Wójcik...
