This original landscape painting on panel by Peter Hoffer is simultaneously contemporary and traditional, with a glistening surface of thick resin over dripping, painterly brushstrokes in deep, vibrant, and highly saturated shades of blue, green, and pink.
Montreal artist Peter Hoffer paints recollections of historical landscape paintings. He studies the history and imagery, then returns to his studio to paint quickly and intuitively his recollections of the paintings. In this body of work the oil paintings are finished with a ¼" of poured resin on the surface; which he calls "a distancing factor." The resin distances us from the actual painting and landscape, much like the effect of viewing the landscape from a car window. His work is about the difference in our relationship to landscape - what once was sublime is now mostly taken for granted. And also the difference between traditional and contemporary landscape painting in art history - what once was a window into another world, now has little presence in the Contemporary concept-driven art world.
