Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. Serene slice of Monterey Bay by Wyoming and California artist Katherine Jean Wipfler (American, B-1955). Thick, confident brushstrokes create a shimmering reflections in the water, contrasted by the pier's strong vertical stance. In some areas, the bright orange under-paint peeks through the upper layers, adding an extra sense of depth and vibrancy. Gilded frame with linen liner is included. Signed in the lower left corner. Inscription on verso states: "Monterey" Painted on location by K. Wipfler. 4-14-87 Image size: 10"H x 8"W. A full-time painter since 1979, she depicts wildlife and figures in landscape and works primarily in oil and outdoors "en plein air" on locations. She was born and raised in central California and attended nearby Columbia Junior College. Her first career was as a surgical technician, and she said that the experience she had with anatomy later helped with her art career. Following this, she decided to become an artist and moved to Idaho Falls and then to Jackson, Wyoming where she began plein air painting in 1980.
