About the Item

Oil on canvas painted at the Sears Tower Offices in Chicago by American artist Peter W. Rogers depicting a sailboat and steamer at a sea of blue waves and under a clouded sky at dusk or dawn. 24" x 36" art 27 1/2" x 39 1/2" framed Peter Rogers was born in Key West, grew up in Western New York State and has lived in New England since the 1960s. After graduation with honors from Harvard University, where he studied government, he went to sea for four years aboard the Coast Guard icebreakers EDISTO and GLACIER and the buoytender SPAR. He is a graduate of the Navy’s Deep Sea Divers School and served as a diver for three years in the Arctic and the Antarctic. He left the service in 1971 as a First Class Quartermaster, the navigation rate. Peter Rogers became a full-time painter in 1976. He was the second President of the American Society of Marine Artists, was a Fellow of ASMA for 20 years, and in recent years served as Vice President. He resigned from ASMA in the summer of 2001. He has had paintings in more than 30 major exhibitions, including the U.S. Congress, the Peabody Essex Museum of Salem, the Mariners Museum, the Maryland Historical Society Museum, the Merchant Marine Academy Museum, Mystic Seaport Museum, the Nautilus Museum, the Cummer Museum, Jacksonville, the Frye Museum, Seattle, the Delaware Center for the arts, the Cape Museum of Fine arts, and the Great Lakes Historical Society Museum. He has had a two-man show at the U.S. Naval Academy museum with Tom Freeman and a one-man show at the Lyman Allyn Museum in New London. His paintings have been acquired for the permanent collections of the Peabody Essex Museum of Salem, the Nautilus Museum, the Philadelphia Maritime Museum, the Merchant Marine Academy, and the Headquarters of the Military Sealift Command, as well as the executive offices of US Steel, Sears Roebuck, IOT Corporation, Sirius Shipbrokers, Stolt-Nielsen Shipping Lines, MBNA America, Eastern Technology, Goodwin Procter, and many other companies. His work has been reproduced in National Fisherman, Nautical Quarterly, Sea History, Small Boat Journal, Viaport, Cleveland Press, Cruising World, Buffalo News, Erie Times, and newspapers in Providence and Newport, as well as in various catalogs. Since 1985, he has broadened his subject matter to include people, landscapes, industrial subjects, waterfalls, rapids, forests, still lives, and cityscapes. For several years he had his own gallery. For many years he was involved in government and municipal finance in his small New England town. His wife is a professor at Tufts University, and they have a 24-year daughter. His particular hobby interest is Eastern European History.
