Pierre Louis Cazaubon
Antique landscape, riverscape oil painting by Pierre Louis Cazaubon

1910's

About the Item

Antique French riverscape/landscape in a beautiful ornate frame by French artist, Pierre Louis Cazaubon, signed in the lower right corner. This attractive post-impressionist oil on thick card of a boat making its way down the Dordogne river at the Bords de L'Isle, Neuvic. The Perigord is a wonderful area in south West France and the artisst has expertly captured the moment. A lone figure makes their way down the peaceful and unspoilt river. Passing reflections of the overgrown trees lining the bank, only interrupted by a quaint clay roofed boathouse to the left of the painting. The artist has managed to animate the painting by the use of impasto enforced knife and brushstrokes and giving the most appealing depth to the water and the quiet countryside beyond. MORE ABOUT THIS PAINTING: Medium: Oil on thick card Overall size: 20.5ins x 17ins or 51cms x 44cms (approx) Date: 1910's - 1920's Condition: The painting, is in overall good antique condition but you should expect imperfections associated with age, such as some missing paint top middle and minor imperfections throughout. The frame, quite likely the original is in good condition for the age but again, has imperfections throughout and there have been previous renovations. Signed: P. Louis Cazaubon - Pierre Louis Cazaubon was born 28 June 1872 in Bordeaux. He was a painter of genre scenes, local scenes, landscapes, seascapes and murals. He was a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and worked in Louis Cabié's studio. His main subjects were seascapes and genre scenes, particularly on Oriental themes, which he rendered in generously textured paint and increasingly tailored colour schemes. He also painted many landscapes of the Bordeaux region and executed a large mural decoration in a room at the Fédération Maritime in Bordeaux. He was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français from 1905, and received an honourable mention in 1912. He participated in numerous exhibitions in England, Germany and the USA. • Antique French Impressionist Landscape/riverscape by Ernest Gaston Marche
    Located in AIGNAN, FR
Antique French impressionist riverscape/landscape oil painting on wood board in a gilt frame, unsigned (see below). This is a typical and charming late 19th Century French impressionist oil painting of a woman reading on the bank of a river. This lively landscape interpretation has been deftly applied on a canvas board by the artist using a small couteau and brushes. Some areas of elevation created with impasto thickened oils and dashes of paint give this painting animation. The light travels in from the bottom right to contrast with the dark hues of the thick riverbank vegetation. • Printemps
    By Charles Levier
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...
