About the Item

Piet Bekaert was a Flemish Artist born in 1939. He attended both the Royal Academy in Ghent and the Academy Julien in Paris. It was in his Parisian years that he spent long days contemplating the wealth of major art, the styles of various periods, and an understanding of the visual evolotion of art history. It was the basic theory of the Impressionist movement that he felt the most integrity, and room for continued exploration. This basic theory was that rather than changing the vision into a represenative painting, accurately recording a scene, if one should break down the scene into basic elements of color, light and form, the eye may reasemble it into an everchanging vision, thus defined...a "Living painting". His technique and his innate sense of simplification or distillation of the complexities of composition support each and unify to become a single force which is unique. In this piece, Porta i Mestre showcases a mastery of color and light, illustrating his deep connection to his homeland and its rural life, which served as a source of inspiration throughout his career.
