About the Item
This work has Calvinist New England written all over it, which is how the New England settlers seeking logging work in this storied California coastal town made themselves feel right at home. The transplanted New England ambiance led to Mendocino serving as the mythical “Cabot Cove, Maine” for the long-running television show “Murder, She Wrote.”
Plein-air artist and muralist Ray Strong spent his summers painting in this area, even after settling in Santa Barbara later in his career. Additionally, Strong co-founded the Art Students League of San Francisco as well as The Oak Group—the latter for painters like him who focused on preserving natural landscapes.
