About the Item

Encaustic, abstracted, impressionistic landscape of a wintry forest at evening "Snow at Dusk" made in 2024 by Regina Quinn encaustic, India ink, and oil with wax on panel 24 x 24 x 2 inches framed About the artist: After nearly three decades in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, Regina now lives in New York’s Northern Catskills. Although she is a New York City native, she has spent most of her adult life in the northern mountains which are a continuous source of inspiration for her work which is rooted in a deep connection to the natural world, combined with her sense of stewardship for the fragile balance that allows life to exist and thrive on this planet. Regina holds a Special Studies in Fine Arts degree from Trinity College where she received the Peyser Art Award, first prize and a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Vermont. She exhibits her work extensively in galleries, art centers and museums across the country and has several of her encaustic paintings included in the permanent collection of the Williamsburg Art and Historical Center, in Brooklyn, NY, and the Museum of Encaustic Art - Encaustic Art Institute in Santa Fe, NM. Regina teaches encaustic workshops internationally and serves on the Board of Directors of International Encaustic Artists. She has received numerous awards for her work, including the 2020 Faber Birren National Color Award and the 2021 Cooperstown Art Association’s Essential Art Grand Prize. "I was struck by the luminosity and subtlety of Doug and Mike Starn’s encaustics in 2014, and immediately sensed that encaustic was my medium—one that could give voice to my aesthetic, my sensibility, and my quiet personality. I haven’t looked back. I work almost exclusively with encaustics and oils with beeswax, and recently began using those media over watercolor. Beginning with watercolors on gessoed panels, I build opaque and transparent encaustic layers, carving and scratching into them with blades and knives creating depth and texture. Next, I apply oils mixed with beeswax, enhancing texture and luminosity. Layering, carving, scraping and incising allow earlier layers to emerge, much the way geological and weathering processes obscure and expose, and as visual memories come into focus even as they fade away."

Trees In Winter, Oil Painting
By Valerie Berkely
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
I used my finger tips to apply many layers of translucent cool colors in oil and wax. There is a softly calm feeling to the quiet distance of the winter trees in the background while one sturdy pine comes forth. Hints of apricot and lavender glow from beneath misty layers. My choice in this color palette lends itself to any season's decor, inspired by Wolf Kahn. The edges of this piece are natural wood. This piece is wired to hang.

About the Artist
Valerie Berkely uses her finger tips as brushes to create her abstract paintings. For Valerie, the art is all about the process, the paint, her mood, and the moment. She admires the artist Wolf Kahn, who once said, “the picture is the conclusion of an experiment in which the hint of an image becomes actuality." Like Kahn, Valerie’s paintings combine pictorial landscapes with painterly abstraction. The vibrant primary colors capture the hues of the sun rising and setting, and the texture of her fingers across the surface divides sea, land, and sky. There is something very dreamy about these works, exemplified by their color, texture, and atmospheric quality. Valerie’s first “art epiphany” was seeing Seurat's La Grande Jatte at the Art Institute of Chicago. “Bowled me over! I actually fell down. And I knew I was to become a painter.”
