About the Item

This painting depicts the Equestrian Statue of Henry IV by Pont Neuf, Paris, France. A colorful landscape scene with the view of the Seine River in Paris, and at the distance the iconic buildings behind the bridge. The attractive perspective is what makes this painting so interesting and desirable with vibrant brush work and thick use of paint. The piece is done in a highly effortlessly manner and is a wonderful display of Sautin's Post-Impressionist style, with bold colors of burnt sienna, olive green, and white. This painting is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a wonderful dark mahogany & gold tone wood frame with velvet liner and with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 7 x 9.5 inches Frame measures 13.25 x 15.25 inches René Sautin was born in 1881 in Monfort-sur-Risle on Normandy region at the northern France. He entered the Ecole Beaux Arts, Rouen, studying painting under P. Zacharie. Then in Paris Sautin studied at the Ferrier Studio, where he learned from Albert Lebourg, who was born in the same village. He entered Le Salon des Independants with Signac and Luce. He was married to Marthe in 1910 and they settled in Andelys in 1911, making friends with the Pissarro’s sons Lucien and Paul-Émile. He was also influenced by Signac, Luce, Derain, Guillaumin, Lebasque, Bigot, Ge-nez, who came back to Andelys to paint the Seine riverbanks. Rene Sautin was essentially a landscape artist, and he was mostly known for his French townscape paintings. Around 1923 he left the impressionist style and started to explore fauvism. Sautin found an equilibrium even in the smallest of expressions, and from 1925 until the 1950s, his main focus remained in the feeling of totality of each of his landscape compositions, while presenting them in a personal manner. Sautin died in 1968 and through his works the viewer can experience the sentiment of those depicted times, with the use of strong brushwork that permeated a certain invocation to dominating his will with an intense sensitivity. PROVENANCE: Private collection South San Francisco, CA; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

"Pont De La Concorde" Post-Impressionist Oil Painting Across the Seine in Paris
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his impressionistic works depicting the "Pont De La Concorde" bridge across the Seine in Paris with the Eiffel tower in the distance. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with figures and cars over the bridge and a man leaning against the edge overlooking the bright water and reflections. There is a boat lower right and we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The figures are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of fun and enjoyment from that sunny day at the Seine. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent. The piece is signed by the artist lower right and titled on verso, it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 20 x 29 inches Frame measures 25.5 x 34.5 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
