About the Item

Signed lower left and dated 1921. About the artist: From an affluent and artistic family, Reynolds Beal and his younger brother Gifford both made careers in art. Beal was born in the Bronx and spent his childhood exploring and sketching the East River. He studied marine engineering at Cornell, and art at the Art Students League with John Twachtman and with William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock School. For many years he was torn between careers in art and ship designing, though his family's affluence allowed him to maintain a lifestyle as both and artist and a yachtsman. He spent years between marine-related jobs and life as an artist, often plagued by problems related to "nervous prostation". He traveled and painted with Childe Hassam, William Glackens and H. Dudley Murphy, and with Hassam, Bellows, Sloan, Glackens and Prendergast helped found the Society of Independent Artists and the New Society of Artists. From 1900 to 1907, he painted almost exclusively at the artist's community in Noank, Connecticut with Henry Ward Ranger. After 1912, Beal focused more on the Hudson River Valley, where he painted the colorful and whimsical scenes of the traveling circuses that came through the region. For many years he lived and painted harbor scenes in Rockport and Gloucester, Massachusetts. Beal is considered both an Impressionist and an adventurous Modernist. His colorful watercolors and oils are rendered in spontaneous, mosaic-like brush strokes. He was most active artistically from 1910 to 1920, after which he became ill. After 1940 he did little painting. He died in Rockport, Massachusetts in 1951. He is widely known for a series of circus and carival paintings he produced. Organizations and exhibits: Beal was a member of the New York City artist organizations -- Salmagundi Club, Lotus Club, Century Club, National Academy of Design (elected 1909), National Arts Club, Brooklyn Society of Etchers, and the American Water Color Society; the Boston Art Club, North Shore Art Association (Gloucester, MA) and the Society of American Engravers. In 1916 Reynolds Beal, along with Glackens and others, founded the Society of Independent Artists (NYC). Beal exhibited at the Salmagundi Club (1902, Hurley Prize); Clausen Gallery (NYC, solo, 1905); The Panama–Pacific International Exposition (San Francisco, CA, 1915); Vose Galleries (Boston, solo, 1916); Musée du Luxembourg (Paris, France, 1919); and the Fitchburg Art Center (Fitchburg, MA, 1944). • The Red House, Cornwall, Connecticut
    By Charles Warren Eaton
    Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
Signed lower left. Born in Albany, New York, Charles Eaton became a Tonalist landscape painter much influenced by George Inness. His intimate, moody landscapes were known for subdued golden-brown hues and muted tonal harmonies, and the subject was often the landscape in late autumn, evening time, or winter. These paintings were groundbreaking because they were relatively small in scale and intimate countryside views, which was a departure from the generally popular panoramic, romanticized views of Hudson River School painters. In 1879, he enrolled at the National Academy of Design in New York City and then studied figure painting at the Art Students League with J. Carroll Beckwith. He became a close associate with Leonard Ochtman and Ben Foster...

  • Uncle Dick's Fish House
    By William Lester Stevens
    Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
Signed lower right Bio: Born in Rockport, Massachusetts, Stevens received his initial art training from Parker Perkins, a local marine painter who charged him fifty cents an hour. He later spent four years at Boston's Museum of Fine Arts School, where he studied under Edmund Tarbell, among others. Although influenced by Tarbell, Stevens' wide range of brushstrokes and impressionist style prevented him from being classified as a "Tarbellist," as many of Tarbell's followers were labeled. Stevens joined the Army in 1917 and was sent to Europe where he continued to paint and sketch. Upon his return to the United States, he was pleased to discover that Rockport had become a popular haven for artists. Though he was the only native son among them, such well-known painters as Frank Duveneck, Childe Hassam, Leon Kroll and Jonas Lie also recorded the scenery of Rockport, Cape Ann and Gloucester. In 1921, together with fifty other artists, Stevens founded the Rockport Art Association, primarily to plan exhibitions of the work of outstanding area artists. Throughout the course of his long career, Stevens taught, first in Rockport, then at Boston University (1925-1926) and Princeton (1927-1929). He later gave lessons and held one-man shows in Charlotte and Asheville, North Carolina, where his work was well-received. Southerners particularly enjoyed his views of famous Southern gardens and cities. Though the Depression years were difficult for both the artist and his family, the 1930s did bring Stevens some measure of commercial and personal success. He did a number of covers for "The American Legion Magazine" and won prizes in New Haven, Springfield and Rockport. In 1934, he abandoned Rockport to the growing tourist population and moved to Springfield, and then to Conway, Massachusetts, where he remodeled an old farmhouse and constructed a studio which looked north towards Mount Monadnock...

  • Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder
    By JD Henderson
    Located in Hillsborough, NC
Impressionist/Post impressionist style painting 'Kirkton Bridge, Balquhidder' by Scottish contemporary artist JD Henderson, is a Monet-like image of a Scottish bridge in Balquhidder, the Clan homeland of McLaren in central Scotland. Dated 1995 (verso) and signed by the artist in the lower right corner, the painting is on canvas with oil paint in a new gold frame. JD Henderson is described as a 20th century Scottish Colourist and a landscape artist, using impressionism and post impressionism styles. 'Kirkton Bridge' demonstrates the Colourist trend, but also broader brushstrokes and thick applications of paint from post impressionism that gives the subject matter priority over fleeting naturalistic color and light. The actual bridge and water...
