About the Item

A mid century oil on board view of the seafront at Cannes in the South of France by Robert Auguste Jaeger also known as Le Veneur. Signed 'Le Veneur' bottom right presented in modern wood frame under glass. A charming painting of the view of the coastline along La Croisette, the iconic promenade famous for the Cannes Film Festival. Jeager has used vivid and lively colours and technique to give a wonderful languid yet elegant feel to the composition. The iconic palm trees and the depiction of the snaking balustrade are especially successful and make for a strong perspective and pleasing composition. The eye is also taken to the far off hills on the other side of the Baie de Cannes and the coastline towards St Tropez. Jaeger was much influenced by the Fauvists and the Impressionists, both influences are clearly visible in this painting. Born June 3, 1896 in Paris, Jaeger was the eldest of three boys. Having completed some of his artistic education in Nice, South of France, he enlisted in the Marines in 1914. In 1915, he was a pilot in the 4th Zouave. During his time in the forces he made artistic friendships that would last his lifetime notably with Mermoz, and Saint-Exupéry. Very seriously wounded, paralyzed, he ended the war at the Salle Pétrière hospital in Paris. Despite this, during his stay, he obtained his degree in architecture. He the then entered as a student at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied with Olivier, Bompart, Raoul Dufy and Othon Friez. He won his first prize with Cluny in 1922. His life at the time was divided between travel, collaborations with the decorators Briant and Robert, Sormani, André Citroën. He traveled to Italy, Spain, Algeria, Egypt, Hungary, Portugal and especially Provence and Brittany. Between the wars he was received at the Villa Medici in Rome and formed a great friendship with the architect Jacques Carlu and the sculptors Raymond Delamarre and Carlo Sarrabezolles, all three Prix de Rome. The 1930s would also be his great era as a singer. An accomplished musician, he decided to study bel canto, he wanted to understand the common thread of "singing with painting". He worked with Fiodor Ivanovich Chaliapin, then Murator. These years proved to be the great era of the tenor. He joined the operas of Bordeaux and Paris on June 19, 1930. He became a great friend of Georges Thill In 1939 he answered the call of General de Gaulle, taking advantage of his cover as a lecturer in the history of Art, he joined the resistance. Commander of the Turma Vengeance network, he was very active to the detriment of his duties as a teacher, which he ceased. At the end of the war, decorated, tired, he left with Othon Friez for Saint-Paul-de-Vence with Paul Roux and worked at the Colombe d'or. In April 1946 he exhibited at Pétridès, Faubourg Saint-Honoré in Paris. Terribly affected by the death of his wife in 1954, he retreated into his art, had a large workshop built in his house in Parmain where he organized his life between his friends and his travels in Brittany, Aude, Provence and the Côte d'Azur . .
