This charming oil painting by Danish artist Rudolf Bertelsen (1828–1921) depicts two boys from the prestigious Herlufsholm Boarding School, dressed in their school uniforms, enjoying a peaceful summer day fishing by the River Suså. The artwork is signed "R.B" and inscribed on the reverse with "Herlufsholm 1894." Set in its original gilded frame, the painting beautifully captures the serenity of Danish countryside life, a theme that Bertelsen often explored in his work. Rudolf Bertelsen: A Life Dedicated to Art and Teaching Rudolf Vilhelm Valdemar Bertelsen was a Danish landscape painter and art educator. He began his artistic studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1846 and later trained as a drawing teacher under the renowned architect G.F. Hetsch (1788–1864). Although he pursued a career in education, it wasn’t until around the age of 40 that Bertelsen fully embraced landscape painting. For 45 years, from 1857 onward, Bertelsen worked as a drawing teacher at Herlufsholm Boarding School, located just outside Næstved, about 90 km southwest of Copenhagen. His deep connection to the school and the surrounding landscape is evident in many of his works, which often depict scenes from the Næstved region. Between 1878 and 1894, he exhibited regularly at the prestigious Charlottenborg Art Exhibitions. In his later years, he expanded his artistic repertoire to include delicate floral paintings. His paintings are characterized by their gentle, detailed execution, reflecting his profound love for nature and meticulous artistic approach. Bertelsen was widely admired not only by his students but also by many contemporary artists who frequented his hospitable home. Among his acquaintances were prominent Danish painters such as A. Brendekilde, L.A. Ring, Gottschalk, Ludvig Find, and Svend Hammershøi. Founded in 1565, Herlufsholm Boarding School is Denmark’s oldest and most prestigious private boarding school. It was originally established for "sons of noble and other honest men" on the grounds of a former 12th-century Benedictine monastery. Over time, the school became an institution of excellence in Danish education. The River Suså, which runs alongside the school, has long been a source of inspiration for artists and writers. In Bertelsen’s painting, the river serves as both a literal and symbolic backdrop, representing the tranquil and idyllic childhood experience of the Herlufsholm students. With its harmonious composition and delicate handling of light, "Boys Fishing at Herlufsholm" exemplifies Bertelsen’s ability to capture the simple beauty of everyday life. The painting depicts his connection to the landscapes and traditions of Denmark.
