About the Item
Primary Colour Series – Jay and Butterflies and Dusk to Dawn were inspired by Japanese woodblock prints, with a subtle nod to the traditions of calligraphy. The series continues Shizico Yi’s Sunlit Series, where she further develops her visual language in and around the colour yellow (hence the use of gold leaf).
At its heart, it is an exploration of the healing power of yellow and a celebration of sunlight—bringing much-needed warmth after the long, cold winters of the UK.
In the summer of 2023, Shizico Yi embarked on a major project: a body of plein air paintings collectively titled the Sunlit Series. Each work was meticulously crafted across multiple mediums, with gold leaf gilding woven into her brushstrokes, and a restrained palette of yellow alongside monochrome tones.
Using gold, ink, gesso, and acrylic, she orchestrates a visual symphony of light and texture.
Each painting within the series explores golden hues engaging in dialogue with layered imagery inspired by her garden and the wildlife that visit daily.
Shizico’s distinctive use of materials is fully expressed in works such as the Jay Bird—where gold against dark ink, and luminous yellows layered with grey gesso, bring the bird to life.
Through these contrasts, she evokes a mystical, imaginary world of light, layering monochrome tones into a radiant interplay upon textured surfaces of gold and ink.
Sunlit Series:
Nestled within what she calls her “Golden Period,” the Sunlit Series is a profound exploration of yellow—a colour she believes holds healing power for those effect by grief. The result is a breath-taking testimony to the deep connection between material, subject, and artist: the layered meanings of her garden, the resilience of nature, and the luminous solace of light.

Dr. Shizico Yi is a London based artist, working on installations, films and paintings; the documentary nature of her work often concerns about the loss, repetition, the everyday subject and memories . With design and film background, Shizico combines her interests making installation projects which relate to artist's personal life in relation to the society and human condition at large.
Shizico Yi holds a PhD in Fine Art awarded by UEL, UK 2017; she had completed a Master in Fine Art with a BA in Womenswear from UAL. London. She is also the Winner of Women Film Makers: Best Shorts Competition 2013 Los Angels. USA.
