A gentle and brilliantly executed mid-century modern painting that features an abstracted harbour scene, painted in oil onto board and dated 1960.
The composition likely depicts a small fishing village with moored boats and angular buildings nestled along the shore. Containing elements of geometric abstraction, the forms of the boats and architectural elements have been deconstructed and simplified into an arrangement of sharp lines and faceted shapes.
The colour palette is an elegant blend of muted earth tones, including yellow, deep green, soft blue, and beige, creating a harmonious, atmospheric effect. The boats are rendered in stark white, drawing the viewer’s eye toward the center of the composition.
Executed in a restrained yet confident manner, the brushstrokes are smooth and blended, with subtle textural variations that enhance depth and structure.
This oil on board is housed in a complementary gilt frame with an inner linen lining and white border. The painting is in excellent vintage condition, and the frame has some surface marks at the bottom right of its inner border.

About the artist:
Ian Mood is a contemporary artist with an international reputation, having shown work with Saatchi London, Brooklyn Art Library, Battersea Art Fair & Manchester Art Fair – as well as being represented by numerous established galleries in the UK and US. He recently held his first solo show in New York.
In 2019, he collaborated as artist in residence with The National Theatre (Madness of George III with Mark Gatiss) and The Royal Exchange Manchester (Mother Courage with Julie Hesmondhalgh).
