Te Kaha, Bay Of Plenty, New Zealand, early 20th Century by Ernest William BUCKMASTER (1897-1968) Large early 20th Century view of Te Kaha, New Zealand, oil on canvas by Ernest Buckmatser. Excellent quality and condition example of the famous Impressionist painters work who travelled throughout Australia & New Zealand painting early accounts of its landscapes and coastal views. Presented in its original gilt frame. Signed. Measurements: 40" x 32" framed approx Provenance: Single family though descent, acquired directly from the artist Biography Buckmaster was apprenticed to James Beament, a signwriter and amateur artist, in 1913. He then took classes under Bernard Hall and W.B. McInnes at the National Gallery Art School in Melbourne from 1918 to 1924. While still a student, he began exhibiting with the Victorian Artists Society. In 1928 he was commissioned to paint a posthumous portrait of Adam Lindsay Gordon for the Commonwealth Historic Memorials Committee. Many important commissions ensued and his works were greeted with mounting interest. In 1945 he was appointed an official war artist and was sent to document the Japanese surrender in Singapore. Buckmaster was particularly sensitive to fluctuations of light on the landscape according to the time of day and the season. He also painted waterscapes and river landscapes. Oil on panel, signed and dated 1894 in the lower left and inscribed on the reverse. The frame measures 15.25" x 19.25". Leader was born in Worcester as Benjamin Leader Williams, the son, and first child of eleven children, of notable civil engineer Edward Leader Williams (1802–79) and Sarah Whiting (1801–88). His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn. Evocative seascape, circa 1900, by artist Constantin Alexandrovitch Westchiloff (1877-1945) Signed on bottom left corner and on verso. Titled "Maine" on verso. Presented in a contemporary giltwood frame. Image size: 9"H x 12"W. Framed size: 10.60"H x 14"W x 1"D Westchiloff is an American-Russian artist. He was born in Russia in 1877, and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg; as an artist he traveled extensively in Europe and in the USA. He finally settled in New England, where he died in 1945. He is probably best-known for seascapes (particularly of the New England coastline), but was also well regarded for his landscapes, portraits and figures, and genre subjects. His work, especially after his travels in Europe and then in America, is closest to Impressionist in style. His favored medium was oil, which was well suited to his confident and strong technique.
