About the Item
The technique of American Tonalism is evident in this oil painting on canvas from the early 20th century/late 19th century. Hues of muted greys create the atmospheric mood of dusk on the hills and river. Tonalism is all about working with tones and shades of the same color, often in landscapes, with mist and softened light. For Tonalist artists, capturing a moment of misty mood was more important than naturalistic realism or impressionism focus on light. American Tonalism was popular from the 1880s to about 1920.
This oil on canvas painting is shown in its likely original gilded frame.
The painting is in overall very good condition. The decorative frame is intact with no losses. The painting with the frame is 12.5" by 19", and inside the frame 8" by 13.5".
This is a good example of tonalism style.

The Trossachs, Scotland
By Alfred de Breanski Jnr.
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Landscape painting of The Trossachs, Scottish Highlands, 20th century is after renowned landscape artist Alfred De Breanski, Jnr, (1877-1955). As in this painting, De Breanski established a reputation for his distinctive vivid greens and color in impressionistic style within realism of his subject. This mountain scene with lake and watering cattle demonstrates the oeuvre of this artist, and also his father Alfred de Breanski Sr.
This is a particularly beautiful landscape painting of Scotland, in a favorite natural region by Perthshire. 'The Trossachs' shows fine brushstrokes in the clouds, and area of raised paint over the ground. Light is captured on misty hillsides, and reflected in the water.
De Breanski studied at St Martins School of Art, England, but had the benefit of his father, his mother and his Uncle who were all successful artists of their time, and their work continues to be highly sought after for the detail and light captured in plein art...

A fine tonalist landscape by American artist J. Francis Murphy (1853-1921). Murphy was born in Oswego, New York, he moved to Chicago in 1868, where his father was employed in the shipping industry. In Chicago, Murphy began working as a scene painter in a local theatre and was quickly promoted to lead his co-workers. Largely self-taught, his only training consisted of a few classes at the Chicago Academy of Design. There he became friends with Emil Carlsen and Theodore Robinson, and in 1873, Academy members elected him an Associate; a few weeks later, he became an Academician. His work was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1876, where he was inducted eleven years later. He won numerous prizes, medals and honors for his landscape paintings, which are said to rank with those of George Inness, Alexander Wyant, and Homer Martin. Although his world was a limited one, his landscapes captured the forms of nature and the subtle nuances of the scene. Murphy was referred to as the "American Corot" because of his similarity to the painting style of Camille Corot (1796-1875), one of the original Barbizon...
