California Artist, Chouinard Art Institute, Crocker Museum ----- Signed, verso, 'A Heinsbergen' for Antoon Heinsbergen (Dutch-American, 1894-1989), inscribed 'Painted in Paris from the top floor of the Grand Hotel Paris' and dated 1941. A panoramic view of early twentieth-century Paris with early automobiles, charabancs and pedestrians filling the boulevards converging on the Paris Opera beneath sunny blue skies. Painter and theatrical designer, Antoon Heinsbergen immigrated to Los Angeles as a small boy and first studied at the Chouinard Art School and the Otis Art Institute. He subsequently became sought after as a decorator of theaters and, working with a crew of 185, designed and painted wall and ceiling decorations...

Statement of the artist: "For 26 years, I have been exhibiting, painting and living in my creative universe. I alternate 6 months of painting and 6 months of exhibiting in my gallery in L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue. Previously, I studied textile design (which is apparent in my work), cultural management and the history of art in Paris. I began exhibiting my work in France and abroad in 1994. In 1997, I opened my first permanent exhibition space in Gordes until 2012. In 2014, I moved to L'isle-sur-la-Sorgue. My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements.
