About the Item

A fine impressionist oil painting of dappled light on the ocean by American artist Van Dearing Perrine (1869–1955). Perrine was born in Kansas and moved to New York in the early 1890s to study art at the Cooper Institute and the National Academy of Design. In 1902 he moved to New Jersey where he lived in a series of homes near the Palisades and, based on his various paintings of the region, earned the nickname “Thoreau of the Palisades.” After 1912, Perrine became increasingly obsessed with color, and by the 1930s he was painting in an impressionistic style with a thick impasto. Perrine was a guest of Eleanor Roosevelt at the White House in June 1934; Franklin D. Roosevelt purchased his painting “The Palisades” and hung it in the White House. Perrine’s work has also been collected by the Smithsonian Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the National collection of Fine Arts in Washington. Oil on canvas, signed lower left, and housed in a fine molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 35 in H x 26 in W, actual; 43.5 in H x 34.5 in W, framed. Condition: Painting is in overall very good condition and was professionally cleaned. Scattered paint losses, craquelure with areas of lifting, minor retouch, some pigment fluorescence under UV light from original paint. When painting was cleaned signature became apparent and may have been highlighted although it does not fluoresce. The painting was sold approximately 10 years ago at auction and listed by Van Dearing Perrine, but as unsigned.
