About the Item

Oil on board painting by Verna Jean Versa featuring Mount Webster, Colorado in a green, lush summer landscape from 1960. Painted in vibrant colors of green, blue, and browns. Presented in a custom gold frame, outer dimensions measure 34 ¾ x 50 ⅝ x 2 ⅛ inches. Image size is 25 x 41 inches. Webster Pass crosses over the Continental Divide and summits at 12,103 feet. Situated within the White River National Forest, Webster Pass was established to connect the Snake River Valley and the Hall Valley areas of the Montezuma Mining District. The trail was originally called “Handcart Pass” until the Webster brothers built a toll road. Webster Pass was officially renamed in the 1870s. Painting is clean and in very good vintage condition - please contact us for a detailed condition report. About the Artist: Beginning at age twelve, Versa took morning art classes for five years at the Detroit Institute of Art. While attending Cass Technical High School in Detroit, her poster won first prize in the National Scholastic CTHS competition and also earned her a scholarship from the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. In 1943, at age seventeen, she began a five-year course of study that included classes with Boardman Robinson and two years at nearby Colorado College which at that time was affiliated with the Center. In 1949-51 she earned B.A. and B.S. degrees at the University of Cincinnati (1949-51) where she also won the Gibson Art Award. After teaching for several years at Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, she returned to Colorado Springs where she spent the rest of her life. She taught at Horace Mann Junior High School and later in the 1980s at the Sangre de Cristo Arts and Conference Center in Pueblo. She had one-woman shows at the Art Works Gallery in Canon City, Colorado, and at the Alpha Gallery in Denver. She likewise participated in group exhibitions at the Associated American Artists, New York; Detroit Institute of Arts, Library of Congress, Washington, DC; Cincinnati Art Museum; Mission Gallery, Taos, New Mexico; and the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo. Indicative of her early facility in watercolor, a medium she pursued throughout her professional career, Backyard in Colorado Springs (c. 1945) was done while a student at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Her teachers encouraged her and her fellow classmates to paint readily-accessible urban landscapes either on location or later in the studio based on prior plein-air sketches. At the Center, which had a very active printmaking department overseen by Lawrence Barrett, Versa took up lithography in 1946. Her first image, Acrobat, showing a circus performer washing her hair, was based on a figure in Family of Performers, painted by her fellow classmate, Lew Tilley. The Detroit Institute of Art purchased Acrobat for its permanent collection, and the Library of Congress included it the Sixth National Exhibition of Prints in 1947. Among her other lithographs was Three Sisters exploring the subject of female socializing. While still a student at the Fine Arts Center she also did a mural for Lenox House on the campus of Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
