About the Item

A fine marine painting of the Boon Lighthouse, Isles of Shoals, New Hampshire by American artist Warren Sheppard (1858-1937). Sheppard was born in Greenwich, New Jersey, spending most of his life in the New Jersey/New York where he became well known not only as a marine painter, but as a yacht designer as well. He studied painting under marine specialist Mauritz F. H. De Haas and learned perspective drawing at Cooper Union in New York City. In 1879, Sheppard spent four months sketching in various Mediterranean port cities, and between 1888 and 1893 he lived and worked in Paris and Venice. He was the author of Practical Navigation, a textbook used for many years by the United States Naval Academy. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, artist biography attached on verso, and housed in a fine giltwood gessoed frame. Dimensions: 16 in H x 24 in W, actual; 23.5 in H x 30 in W, framed.
