William Alfred Gibson
Quayside - Edwardian Scottish Glasgow Impressionist marine harbour oil painting

circa 1910

About the Item

A superb Scottish Edwardian Impressionist oil painting by noted artist William Alfred Gibson. One of my favourite Scottish artists, he was well travelled and has been influenced by Corot and the Dutch school. This painting depicts a marine quayside with moored boats being unloaded and is a very impressive painting, painted circa 1910. This is a lovely example of an early twentieth century Scottish Impressionistic oil and a good example of his work. Signed left William Alfred Gibson. Provenance. Scottish Collection. Christies London. Condition. Oil on canvas, image size 36 inches by 28 inches, in good condition. Has fine craquelure in places. Housed in a gilt gallery frame which compliments the picture. Framed size is 44 by 32 inches In good condition behind glass. William Alfred Gibson (1866 - 1931) was born in Glasgow and educated in the city. He spent ten years in the Royal Glasgow Queen's Yeomanry and saw service in the Boer War. After the war he turned to painting, mostly landscapes in oil, being influenced by the Dutch school and Corot, both in subject matter and in the subdued tones of silvery greys, greens and browns which he used. His favourite subjects were river views in Scotland and Holland characterised by powerful leaden grey skies and broken brushwork. Gibson exhibited at the RA, RSA, GI and abroad. He worked in Scotland, England, Holland and France and his work is represented in several public collections.

Joris, Pio Joris attended the Istituto di Belle Arti in Rome and in 1861 he enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca, where he remained for just a year. On a visit to the 1st Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti of Florence in 1861 he was attracted by the naturalistic works from the Naples school. He came into contact with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi during a trip to Capri, Sorrento and Naples in 1866. In Rome, he kept company with Mariano Fortuny, whose painting, with its pleasant, captivating luministic effects, made a very strong impression on Joris. That was how he developed his own very personal artistic language, which went on to bring him remarkable commercial success on an international scale, helped by his collaboration with Paris art dealer...
