About the Item

Fine 19th century landscape oil painting on canvas by Scottish artist William Beattie-Brown (1831-1909), is of a Highland River in Spate. Beattie-Brown excels in capturing the movement of water and atmospheric hills in scenic Scottish backgrounds. Beattie-Brown was a member and academician of the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA), and his signature is followed by RSA to note this distinction as an artist. His work is represented in the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, Glasgow, northern England and in the London Royal Academy. His forte' is in Scottish landscapes painted plein art in Highland settings and in Edinburgh. He excels in painting movement and light on water, especially rapids and falls. His other distinctive style is a forerunner to 20th century Tonalism, how to create atmosphere using shades of similar color in landscapes. His hills and distant trees have the look of dusk and stillness, keeping detail and clarity. This painting features Beattie-Brown's best work, with the wide river dominating the foreground and the muted colors of the distant hills and most distant tree line in the background. His work has a modern appearance even with the traditional naturalistic landscape genre of his time. A pioneer of plein art painting, Beattie-Brown travelled through rural Scotland for the natural subjects of his paintings. The moment of light, in realism and natural surroundings, are hallmarks of his work. The Highland River in Spate is one of two paintings by Beattie-Brown of the same size, imported to Hillsborough North Carolina from Scotland by Saltire Gallerie. They could make a pairing. Both have period gilt frames, of different styles. This frame is in good condition, but has a loss and worn or chipped places and fine lines. It has been retouched with gilt paint in places to minimize the appearance of imperfections. The artist name and RSA (Royal Scottish Academy) are on a gilt plate fixed to the frame, and the artist also signed the painting in oil on the lower right side. The painting is on very good condition maintaining brightness and clarity in clear varnish. No losses or repairs are evident. Minor imperfections consistent with age are visible under spotlight. Ready to hang!
