William Calcott Knell was a celebrated maritime painter of the nineteenth century who worked in Britain and exhibited at the Royal Academy. This painting, typical of his oeuvre, shows Portsmouth harbour, home to the Royal Navy, the Mary Rose and of course HMS Victory, Lord Nelsons’ flagship.
