About the Item

William John Huggins 1781-1845, was a marine painter who became marine painter to King George IV and William IV. He experienced a time at sea and gained a special interest in marine painting, ships and landscapes which proved essential when drawing ships that were in the East India Company's service and living in the proximity of the Company in Leadenhall Street London proved convenient to supplement his income. Huggins exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, where his works found favour with the sea merchants and shipmen. This painting on panel of the Brighton Chain Pier would have probably have been painted in the mid to late 1820's as it had only finished being built in 1823 and being much admired by the shipping community and local population this would have been a much appreciated and desirable work. We have included the pre conservation picture and others of the time of the Pier's existence, it was destroyed in a storm in 1896.
