William Lester Stevens
Rockport In Winter

1922

About the Item

An impressionist winter landscape of Rockport in winter by American artist William Lester Stevens (1888-1969). Born in Rockport, Massachusetts, Stevens first studied with Parker Perkins and then attended the Boston Museum School as a student of William Tarbell, Frank Benson, Philip Hale, and William Paxton. He taught at Princeton and Boston Universities, and by 1964, had won more awards than any other living artist. Stevens, along with his friend Aldro Hibbard, was instrumental in organizing the Rockport Art Association in 1921, and was also a member of the Boston School, traditionalists and impressionists, opposed to the abstraction of art. He became well known for his landscapes, views of everyday life, and portraits. Aldro Hibbard painted this same winter view of Rockport, and it can be found in the Smithsonian collection in Washington, DC. Oil on canvas, signed and dated 1922 lower right, and framed in a beautifully decorated giltwood frame. Dimensions: 42 in H x 48 in W, actual; 54.5 in H x 60.75 in W, framed.

"Solebury Valley"
By William Langson Lathrop
Located in Lambertville, NJ
Signed lower right. Complemented by a period frame. William L. Lathrop (1859-1938) Deemed “Father of the New Hope Art Colony”, William Langson Lathrop was born in Warren, Illinois. He was largely self-taught, having only studied briefly with William Merritt Chase in 1887, at the Art Students League. Lathrop first moved east in the early 1880s, and took a job at the Photoengraving Company in New York City. While there, he befriended a fellow employee, Henry B. Snell. The two men became lifelong friends and ultimately, both would be considered central figures among the New Hope Art Colony. Lathrop's early years as an artist were ones of continuing struggle. His efforts to break through in the New York art scene seemed futile, so he scraped enough money together to travel to Europe with Henry Snell in1888. There he met and married an English girl, Annie Burt. Upon returning to New York, he tried his hand at etching, making tools from old saw blades...
