About the Item

William Shayer (1787–1879) & Henry Brittan Willis (1810–1884) Pastoral Landscape with Cattle and Sheep, circa 1830 Oil on canvas, inscribed on the reverse Presented in a hand-made antique walnut frame This fine collaboration brings together two leading English painters of the early Victorian period, each contributing his particular mastery to the canvas. William Shayer, celebrated for his rustic landscapes and village scenes, painted the expansive countryside setting — the gently rolling meadow, distant hedgerows, and luminous sky filled with drifting clouds. Into this pastoral stage, Henry Brittan Willis, renowned for his highly naturalistic depictions of livestock, introduced the carefully observed animals that animate the composition. In the foreground, a resting cow and sheep are painted with Willis’s characteristic attention to anatomy, while another cow, full of quiet strength, stands alert beside them. Beyond, scattered cattle graze across Shayer’s broad, sunlit pasture, creating a rhythm that carries the eye toward the horizon. The warm palette and finely balanced arrangement lend both dignity and tranquility to the scene, encapsulating the Romantic ideal of the English countryside. Collaborations between Shayer and Willis are especially valued, as they highlight the strengths of each artist: Shayer’s command of setting and atmosphere, and Willis’s sensitivity to the character and form of animals. Painted circa 1830, and housed in a hand-made antique walnut frame, this work stands as a testament to the 19th-century English tradition of pastoral art — at once a celebration of rural beauty and a historical record of agrarian life. The painting came from an art dealer who was retiring back in 2020 and has been in my own collection since then.
