About the Artist: Jesús Rafael Soto (Venezuelan, 1923–2005) was an artist known for his kinetic sculptures and large-scale installations. Like Alexander Calder and George Rickey, Soto’s delicate and responsive constructions react to external stimuli and changes in the atmosphere, as seen in his work Penetrable (1990). “Artistic creation is a force which should preferably be directed towards the exploration of space, of the universe, of the infinite realities which surround us, but of which we are hardly conscious,” Soto once mused. Born on June 5, 1923 in Cuidad Bolívar, Venezuela, he studied at the Escuela des artes plásticas in Caracas from 1942–1947 and later served as the director of the Escuela de bellas artes in Maracaibo, Venezuela until his move to Europe in 1950. Settling in Paris, he associated with the Op Art artists Victor Vasarely and Yaacov Agam, as well as members of the ZERO group such as Otto Piene, Jean Tinguely, and Heinz Mack. Katherine Bakhoum represents art that has been forgotten for a long while. She draws upon the concept and the subject of the orientalism and the enchantment of that period. Through her work we can feel the researches she has done to reveal her Egyptian origins and the magic and power of the bygone times. Katherine Bakhoum has succeeded in imprinting her own stamp to evoke a new world full of charm, nostalgia and magic that is deeply implanted in her canvas. Her power dwells in creating her own style of contemporary expressionism building upon the old orientalism.
Katherine Bakhoum’s art comes up out of an Egyptian childhood and from the distance of a life spent in France. What is left unsaid is as important as what is shown. Decorative yes, as in old orientalism, when everything was texture and what wasn’t texture was veiled, a reincarnation of old spirits, dervishes, orientalist motifs and the stuff of a once powerful civilization, the better to suggest it all might just come to life again.
The choice of ancient subject matters, the echo of orientalist pieces in the collages, like the echo of the appeal of ancient gestures, of foreign lands, and domestic tapestries, all this weaves up out of Katherine Bakhoum’s creations. Sometimes we only have the line of a horizon on which to hang our imagination, sometimes we only have the trace of a profile in the shadows. What we always have is a persistent belief in beauty.
Where there is beauty, there is hope. Katherine Bakhoum has abandoned neither.

ARTIST STATEMENT
Upon my very first exploration of cutting glass and building a mosaic, I realized it required tenacity. The span between the start and finish of a project is never quick and easy. It depends on focus and diligence, and it’s what attracts me most to this medium. As a mosaic artist, my attention is centered on piecing together materials to make art that is visually appealing both for its subject matter as well as its aesthetics.
My influences are the structures and symbols I see around me everyday in NYC. Parts of the city such as buildings, water towers, bridges and sewer covers are often the impetus for a project. My travels through the subway tunnels, streets and parks also lead to inspiration. I particularly love the accessible art underground; those magnificent, colorful and bold mosaic designs that brighten up our subway platforms. Works of art that are often rushed passed, but remain ready to be admired and steady in their function. Additionally, I have an inclination to study faces. I look at a subject and see the shapes and shadows that create them. I relish the process of taking their image apart to input color and texture into the tones I see. The use of color and how colors are combined are the most significant decisions in my work.
Working with a variety of materials that include stained glass, ceramic figures, window glass, mirror and cement are the force from which my designs are created. Glass is scored, broken and nipped down into the pieces I desire to compose the whole. I work quite deliberately, concisely employing both traditional mosaic methods with innovative techniques. Mosaic making has a long history and tradition and I always want to honor that in my work. Part of that homage is to build upon that base by creating and using materials in a unique way.
