About the Item

A powerful and deeply spiritual depiction of a male nude, by the pioneering, influential and highly regarded early Los Angeles Modernist and Symbolist painter Rex Slinkard. This large framed oil on canvas painting, signed by the artist on the verso, was exhibited at the Pasadena Museum of California Art in 2008 in the exhibition "A Seed of Modernism: The Art Students League of Los Angeles, 1906-1953." During his short life and career, Rex Slinkard achieved a status among critics and fellow artists that can rightfully be called legendary. Slinkard was a student and later a teacher at the Art Students League of Los Angeles. As a promising student he received a scholarship to study in New York under the famed painter Robert Henri. The influence of Henri in "Untitled (Reclining Nude)," circa 1910, is evident. But Slinkard also drew upon his own inspirations, not the least of which was his choice of subject – a nude male. This startlingly modern canvas elevates the depiction of the human form to a spiritual level. Slinkard’s life was cut short after he enlisted in the army and, while awaiting transport in New York, died in the influenza epidemic in 1918. A memorial exhibition of Slinkard’s work took place at the Los Angeles Museum in 1919 with a catalog containing an eloquent appreciation by Marsden Hartley. Memorial exhibitions also were held in San Francisco and at the Knoedler Gallery in New York; and his artworks were included in the First Exhibition of the Group of Independent Artists of Los Angeles in 1923. This is the first major work of the artist to be offered to the public in decades, given that virtually his entire output was donated to Stanford University.
