Anne-Marie Joly
The wedding Dress, Large Scale French 1950s Society Portrait

1955

About the Item

A large scale 1950s French society portrait by Anne-Marie Joly. The painting is signed and dated bottom right. Presented in a magnificent carved wood and gesso Montparnasse frame. A truly imposing and luxurious oil on canvas portrait of a society beauty. Joly has captured all the luxuriousness of the sitters sumptuous tulle dress and skirt, with its exquisite embroidered roses, billowing around her as she sits elegantly on a Louis XV silk covered sofa in a beautifully decorated salon. A true 'tour de force' very much of its time. The Dress suggests that it might possibly be a wedding portrait Joly's style is very much to capture the character and 'feel' of the sitter and the setting with quick yet effective brushstrokes rather than super fine detail. The sitter is as yet undiscovered but such a beautiful couture dress and surroundings suggests somebody of the 'beau monde' or aristocracy. It is very much in the tradition of paintings such as Giovanni Boldini's of Consuelo Vanderbilt, the duchess of Marlborough with her son Lord Ivor Spencer-Churchill, 1906 now in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, or the paintings of Philip de László and John Singer Sargent. Anne-Marie Joly studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts et Academies Libre in Paris. She enjoyed considerable success during her lifetime and exhibited extensively winning many prizes including the Salons Nationale des Beaux-Arts, Independants, Terres Latines, Automne, Peinture a l'Eau and the union of Female Artists and Sculptors of which she was also vice president. Her awards included the Grand prix de la Ville de Paris in 1960, the Grand Prix de l'Union des Femmes Peintres et Sculpteurs, Prix Charles Cottet and Prix du salon Nu. Included with the painting is a catalogue from one of her exhibitions in 1963.

  • Large Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas of Tulips Displayed in a Confit Jar.
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Large early 20th century French oil on canvas of tulips displayed in a confit jar. Signed Jean Julien to the bottom left and presented in a period frame. A rather charming and romantic impression of a tulip display. The colour palette is soft and gentle, light and airy and the artist has managed to impart to the whole painting a chalky texture which gives the impression of soft focus. The tulips are delicately painted but with great precision and attention to detail. The artist has thought carefully about both the scale and the shape of the image. The elongated rectangle is a perfect fit for the long ranging tulip stems. A thoroughly charming painting. Jean Pierre Louis Joseph Julien was a French painter born in Marseille on the 12th of May 1888. Julien was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, friend of Marcel Pagnol, Fernandel, Raimu and Tino Rossi. Guy Dornand called him “the ambassador of Provence in Paris”. Between the wars, he stayed in Italy, travelled to North Africa and designed posters for tourism, murals and theatre sets, while remaining faithful to his hometown. He was a member of the 'Association des Marseillais de Paris.' along with his colleague Auguste Durand-Rosé. In 1933 Emmanuel Pontremoli, director of the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts proposed a design project for a school in Rue Saint-Martin, Paris. Several artists were given the chance to compete for this opportunity. Jean Julien impressed and was given the task. Julien taught at the School of Fine Arts in Paris and was also a drawing teacher at the Polytechnic School. Jean Julien died in Sanary-sur-Mer on the 5th of September 1974.

  • French Mid 19th Century Portrait of an Italian Brigand
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 19th Century oil on canvas portrait of an Italian brigand, unsigned, in painted wood and gilt frame. The painting is a fine and fascinating rendition with plenty of wonderful character and detail to the costume, accessories, landscape and seascape. Very atmospheric and imposing much like the character it portrays. There is a trade stamp to the back of the canvas for the Paris firm of Susse Freres. The canvas is on a fine quality stretcher with 'keys'. There is an artist's name or title written on the top of the rear stretcher (see photo). Bands of brigands who populated the hills of southern Italy were steady fodder for the Romantic imagination, and their exploits were reported both factually, fancifully and artistically The painting dates from a period when France, under its then leader Napoleon III, was involved in the conflicts in the Italian states and the unification and eventual creation of the nation of Italy. An earlier and similar portrait exists of the infamous brigand Mazzocchi by Achille-Etna Michallony . Léon Cogniet...

  • Large French Society Portrait, by repute, La Comtesse de Blacas, Château d'Ussé
    Located in Cotignac, FR
Large scale French society portrait from the 1920's featuring a lady in a 'flapper' dress before a castle and it's garden by Georges Gaudy. Signed bottom left and dated, 1925. The painting is by repute of La Comtesse de Blacas, in front of her home Château d'Ussé. Ussé was the subject of a French railroad poster issued by the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans in the 1920s which may have been designed by Gaudy and this may be where the commission for this painting came about. Presented in very fine custom carved wood, gilt Florentine frame. The early 1900's were the zenith of 20th century society portraiture by the likes of Philip de László...
