About the Item

Paul-Élie Gernez (1888-1948) Oil on wood panel signed low right and back with date 1939 Old original frame Size canvas : 54 X 81 cm Size frame : 76 X 103 cm Paul-Élie Gernez (born 27 January 1888 in Onnaing, France, and died 6 September 1948 in Honfleur) was a French painter, watercolorist, engraver and illustrator. Paul-Élie Gernez was tempted at the beginning of his career by Cubism, then returned to a more classical figuration, the landscape, the nudes, the marines, the still life of flowers. He drew his inspiration mainly from Honfleur, where he made many stays. He quickly realizes that he found what he was looking for: the calm and atmosphere of the estuary so loved by Eugène Boudin. Gernez works a lot and wants to achieve his "ranges" every day by making many drawings. In the same spirit, he creates two to four watercolors a day. He works according to nature: nudes, still life and landscapes. Gernez split his time between Paris and Honfleur, which he never left for long. In 1923, he was appointed a Knight of the Legion of Honor. French and foreign museums buy his works. He illustrates two works of etchings, Génitrix by François Mauriac (1925) and Le Chemin de paradis by Charles Maurras (1927) In 1942, illness forced him to rest. His pace is slowing down, but he keeps working. Gernez died in 1948 in Honfleur. National Museum of Modern Art (Paris) Honfleur Museum Bibliography • Dictionary of painters E.
